Chapter 7 - The Shadow Outside

Just as Chloe struck a match, the heavy side door of the warehouse rattled violently.
A loud, hollow pounding echoed across the concrete floor, freezing everyone in place. Nathan immediately stepped in front of me, his posture shifting instinctively into defense. Marcus set down his hammer, his jaw tightening, while Liam moved toward the doorway.
""Who the hell is that?"" Marcus muttered. ""The transport flatbeds aren't supposed to arrive until eleven-thirty.""
The door creaked open before anyone could reach it.
Framed in the dim yellow security light stood a man. He wore an expensive gray wool overcoat with the collar turned up against the drizzle, carrying a leather briefcase. His hair was completely silver, neatly trimmed, and his posture was stiff, hesitant.
He took three steps into the warehouse, his polished leather dress shoes clicking sharply against the gravel-dusted floor.
""Is... is Linda Henderson here?"" the man asked. His voice was gravelly, aged, but carried an inflection that hit my spine like a burst of high-voltage electricity.
I pushed past Nathan's arm and walked onto the porch.
The halogens illuminated the man’s face completely. The bright blue eyes were surrounded by deep crow’s feet; the sharp, proud jaw was softened by age and jowls, but there was no mistaking the bone structure.
Harold.
Forty years. Twenty-six years without a word, without a phone call, without a dollar.
A suffocating silence settled over the warehouse. The air compressor hissed in the corner, releasing pressure with a sudden chhh-chunk that made Harold flinch.
Grant moved instantly. He didn't yell. He didn't shout. He walked down the three steps of the porch with a terrifying, measured calm, his fists clenched at his sides, his work boots leaving heavy chalk-dusted footprints.
""Get out,"" Grant said. His voice was barely above a whisper, but it cut through the room like a razor blade.
""Grant,"" Harold said, his voice cracking, raising one gloved hand in a placating gesture. ""Son. Please. Look at you... you're a grown man.""
May you like
""Don't call me son,"" Grant growled, stopping three feet from the older man. ""You don't have the right to breathe the same air as that woman. Turn around and walk out that door before I take this framing hammer and turn your luxury sedan into scrap metal.""
""I have something for her,"" Harold insisted, clutching the briefcase tighter against his chest. ""I hired a private investigator in Boston six months ago. I’ve been tracking you all. I know what tonight is. Linda... Linda, please, just five minutes.""
