Chapter 8 - A Mother's Reckoning

The sun rose over Lake Michigan, casting long ribbons of gold and amber across the manicured lawns of the Romano estate. In the master suite, I sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the horizon change colors while Ivy slept peacefully in the center of the massive king-sized bed, surrounded by down pillows.

I hadn't slept a single wink. Every creak of the floorboards, every gust of wind against the glass had set my nerves on fire. In my lap sat Noah’s camera. I had cleaned the lens with a soft microfiber cloth, carefully wiping away three years of accumulated dust and grime.

The click of the suite's heavy brass door made me jump to my feet.

Aleandro stepped inside. He looked exhausted, the faint shadow of stubble darkening his jaw, but his suit was clean and his posture remained impeccably straight. When he saw me standing there with the camera clutched against my stomach, the tension in his shoulders visibly relaxed.

""It’s over, Grace,"" he said quietly, closing the door behind him. ""All of it. Dominic Rossi and his lieutenants will never threaten anyone again. The police have already received Victor’s taped confession regarding Noah’s murder and Elena’s sabotage. By noon, Noah’s official cause of death will be amended to homicide, and his name will be fully cleared of any reckless behavior.""

A heavy, painful sob broke from my throat before I could stop it. I covered my face with both hands, three years of suffocating grief, isolation, and shame finally washing out of me. When Noah died, society had whispered behind my back. They assumed he had a secret addiction, that he had ended his own life, that he had abandoned his young wife and unborn child. I had carried that bitter sting every single day while scrubbing the floors of the wealthy.

I felt strong, warm arms wrap securely around me, pulling me gently against a solid chest.

Aleandro didn't say anything. He simply held me while I cried, letting the tears soak into the fine fabric of his charcoal jacket. He was a feared mafia Don, a man whose name terrified judges and politicians alike, yet in this room, his embrace was the safest place I had ever known.

""He was a good man, Grace,"" Aleandro whispered near my ear, his voice rough with emotion. ""He died protecting the truth. You don't ever have to hide again.""

I pulled back slightly, wiping my cheeks, looking up into his intense dark eyes. ""Why did you do all of this for us? You could have taken the drive, handled Victor, and sent us away with a check.""

Aleandro looked down at me, his gaze sweeping over my face with an honesty that made my breath hitch. ""Because for four years, my life was nothing but darkness and retribution. I thought I was dead inside. And then last night, a little girl with her father's eyes walked up to me, told me my tie was crooked, and ordered me to smile.""

He raised a hand, his calloused thumb gently brushing away a stray tear from my cheek. ""She brought light into this house, Grace. And so did you.""

Behind us, a tiny yawn broke the heavy silence.

""Mommy?"" Ivy rubbed her eyes, sitting up in the middle of the giant bed, her messy curls sticking up in every direction. She looked at Aleandro and smiled brightly. ""Mr. Boss, did you fix my camera yet?""

Aleandro chuckled—a rich, deep laugh that seemed to chase away every ghost lingering in the room. He walked over to the bed and bowed slightly. ""The camera is safe, little princess. And from now on, nobody will ever try to take it from you again.""
