Chapter 5 - The Drive's Secret

Aleandro stood in the quiet library for several moments, listening to the muffled commotion downstairs fade into nothingness. The storm outside had reached its peak, rain lashing against the glass like shrapnel. He slipped his firearm back into his shoulder holster, ran a hand through his dark hair, and turned toward where Ivy and I were huddled on the floor.

He knelt down on both knees, reducing his towering height until he was level with us.

""Are you hurt, Grace?"" he asked, his voice remarkably gentle compared to the monster who had just sentenced a man to oblivion.

""I'm... we're okay,"" I managed to whisper, though my wrist ached and my whole body was trembling from the adrenaline crash.

He looked at Ivy, whose tear-stained face was pressed against my neck. Aleandro reached into his pocket and pulled out a clean, silk handkerchief. He held it out toward her. ""A brave photographer needs to keep her eyes clear to focus the lens,"" he said softly.

Ivy sniffled, peeked out from behind my shoulder, and took the silk cloth, wiping her nose with it. ""He broke Daddy's camera,"" she whispered sadly.

""He didn't break it,"" Aleandro assured her, his eyes warm. ""He only opened the back. I will have the finest craftsman in Chicago polish every single screw and restore it to perfection. I promise you that.""

He looked back at me, his expression turning grave as he extended his palm toward the camera resting on the low table. ""May I?""

I nodded slowly. ""Noah left a note inside. He said to give the drive only to you.""

Aleandro carefully peeled away the electrical tape, extracting the black micro-drive from the hollowed spool compartment. He walked over to the massive mahogany desk, booted up his encrypted workstation, and slid the drive into an adapter port.

I stood up, carrying Ivy, and stepped closer to the glowing monitors.

The screen flickered, and dozens of high-resolution folders populated the desktop. Aleandro clicked open the first batch. High-shutter-speed photographs appeared, taken with extreme clarity in low light. They showed Victor Santo sitting inside a luxury penthouse suite at the Drake Hotel, shaking hands with Dominic Rossi—the brutal head of the rival Rossi syndicate. Spread across the glass coffee table between them were detailed shipping manifests bearing the official Romano seal, blueprinted transport routes, and lists of port authorities on the payroll.

Then Aleandro clicked on a folder labeled Audio_Backup.

A crackling recording filled the room. Victor’s voice came through clearly: ""Aleandro has grown soft since his wife died in that car wreck. He doesn't have the stomach for total war anymore. Once the shipment arrives at the southern yard on the 27th, we take him out. It will look like an internal coup. The Rossi family absorbs the north side, and I take over the docks.""

Noah’s voice suddenly cut in, barely a whisper from behind a curtain: ""Oh God, they're going to kill him...""

The sound of a door banging open followed. Scuffling. Shouts. The horrifying sound of furniture shattering, followed by Victor yelling: ""Catch him before he reaches the fire escape!""

Then the audio cut out into static.

Aleandro’s face had turned completely to stone. The veins in his temples pulsed with murderous tension. But as he looked at the date stamp on the screen, his eyes suddenly widened with a revelation that hit him like a physical blow.

""October 14th,"" Aleandro muttered under his breath, his voice cracking with an emotion I had never expected to hear from him.

""What is it?"" I asked, sensing the sudden shift in the air.

He slowly turned his head to face me, his dark eyes brimming with unshed tears. ""Four years ago, my wife Elena didn't die in an accidental brake failure. She died on October 14th. Victor told me it was a mechanical defect. But these files... these files prove that Victor disabled her car to force me into mourning so he could siphon off our assets.""

He looked at the tiny camera resting beside the keyboard.

""Your husband didn't just document high treason, Grace,"" Aleandro whispered, his voice trembling with profound reverence. ""He uncovered the truth about my wife's murder. He gave me back my soul.""
