Chapter 3 - The Threat Behind the Smiles

""Principal Harris, I demand to know why my son Oliver was pulled from his mathematics exam to sit in a holding room,"" the woman said coldly, sweeping into the office without acknowledging Michael, Ethan, or me. ""I am Brenda Sterling, president of the Oakridge Parent-Teacher Association, and I will not have my child interrogated over whatever circus is taking place with the new special-needs transfer.""

Ethan flinched at the sound of her voice, his little hands tightening around my fingers until my knuckles turned white. He didn't look up at Brenda, but his eyes darted toward Oliver. The boy looked down at the floor, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, refusing to make eye contact with Ethan.

""Mrs. Sterling, thank you for coming,"" Principal Harris said evenly, though a flicker of annoyance crossed his face. ""Nobody is interrogating your son. However, Oliver was Ethan’s designated peer buddy for his first week of orientation. According to attendance logs, Oliver was the last student seen standing near Ethan's locker before the morning bell rang.""

Brenda let out a sharp, dismissive laugh that felt like ice water down my spine. ""Are you implying my son had something to do with the police presence out front? Oliver is an honor roll student! His father sits on the city council, and our family donated the entire computer laboratory to this academy! If that boy,"" she pointed a manicured finger directly at Ethan, ""is having disciplinary or behavioral problems adapting to a mainstream environment, that is a matter for his parents and special education aides—not my son!""

""Don't you dare point at my son,"" I snapped, standing up to face her. ""Ethan didn't do anything wrong. Someone put something dangerous in his locker, and Ethan told us a boy promised him friendship if he kept quiet about it. Ethan spoke about Oliver every single night this week. He thought Oliver was his best friend!""

Oliver’s shoulders hitched. He looked up, his face pale, his lower lip trembling slightly. ""Mom..."" Oliver began timidly.

""Be quiet, Oliver,"" Brenda commanded instantly, cutting him off with a venomous glare. ""You will not speak to anyone without our family attorney present. Principal Harris, if you keep us here another minute, I will call the district superintendent directly. You know very well who funds the extracurricular programs in this district.""

Officer Ramirez stepped forward, his authoritative presence cutting through Brenda’s theatrical posturing. ""Mrs. Sterling, this is an active police investigation involving grand larceny and stolen municipal property. School board politics have no jurisdiction over criminal statutes. Oliver, son, look at me. You are not under arrest, and you aren't in trouble. Did you see anyone approach Ethan's locker this morning?""

Oliver looked up at the officer, then cast a terrified glance toward his mother. Brenda’s hand rested on the boy’s shoulder, her fingernails pressing so tightly through his polo shirt that her knuckles turned pale. ""He didn't see anything, Officer,"" Brenda spoke for him, her voice smooth, calculated, and devoid of warmth. ""Oliver was in the cafeteria until the first bell. Isn't that right, sweetie?""

Oliver hesitated for a second too long. His eyes flickered toward Ethan, filled with a sudden flash of profound guilt and sorrow. ""Yes, Mom,"" he whispered obediently, his voice hollow. ""I was in the cafeteria.""

Ethan made a soft, wounded whimpering sound. ""Oliver..."" Ethan muttered, his voice choked with confusion. ""You gave me the dinosaur sticker. You said we were a team.""

Oliver shrank backward, burying his face in his jacket collar, completely unable to look Ethan in the eye. Brenda pulled her son toward the door, sneering at our family. ""There you have it. Keep your troubled child away from my son, Mrs. Parker. Some children simply belong in specialized institutions, not regular public schools where they drag down everyone else.""

Before Michael or I could unleash the fury boiling inside us, Brenda yanked the door open and vanished down the hallway with Oliver in tow. Principal Harris stared at the closed door, rubbing his temples with deep frustration. ""I apologize for Mrs. Sterling’s hostility,"" Harris murmured. ""Her husband is Richard Sterling, one of the wealthiest commercial real estate developers in the county.""

""Her husband?"" Officer Vance suddenly interjected, pulling out his digital notepad. ""Wait a second. What did you say her husband's name was?""

""Richard Sterling,"" Harris repeated, looking puzzled. ""Sterling Crest Development.""

Officer Vance scrolled rapidly through his screen, his eyebrows shooting up in alarm. ""Ramirez, check the dispatch log from last night's burglaries. The primary victim of the residential break-in was an architectural consulting firm working on the municipal downtown expansion. Do you know who owns the building that was burglarized?""

Ramirez looked at his partner, the color slowly leaving his face. ""Richard Sterling.""
