Chapter 4 - The Secret Apartment

Miriam pushed herself out of her chair, her manicured fingers trembling against the mahogany armrests.

"This is illegal entrapment! You engineered this entire trap while playing the doting wife in the kitchen!"

"I spent eleven years being a faithful wife while you treated me like an inconvenient tenant in my own life," I answered.

"You sat at my kitchen counter eight months ago, calculating the square footage and deciding how you would redecorate when I was gone."

Miriam took a step backward toward the French doors that opened to the back patio.

"We were trying to protect our family's future! You were always too cold, too independent, too focused on your hospital career!"

"I was focused on paying seventy percent of the mortgage while your son gambled away his salary on cryptocurrency and private dinners," I replied.

"And while you two were drafting eviction timelines for New Year's Day, I was signing a lease on a two-bedroom apartment in the Pearl District."

Wesley’s eyes widened further.

"You moved out in October? But you've been sleeping here every night!"

"I’ve been sleeping in the guest room while my furniture was being delivered across town," I said, standing up from my chair.

"I came here this morning solely to cook Thanksgiving dinner, let you deliver your ultimatum, and hand you yours."

I reached into my pocket and pulled out an envelope containing two sets of keys and an official eviction summons.

"Since I am the sole legal owner of this parcel, you are currently occupying the premises as unauthorized month-to-month tenants."

"You told me I had until New Year's to pack my bags," I said, looking Wesley dead in the eye.

"You and your mother have forty-eight hours."
