Chapter 1 - The Trail of Hidden Receipts

Nathan pointed his finger at the glowing screen, his jaw set in a hard, rigid line. ""Take a close look at this, Derek. These aren't wholesale lumber yards, commercial fasteners, or industrial supply warehouses. Not a single cent here went to a hardware distributor.""

My pulse hammered in my ears as my eyes scanned the columns. Line after line of transaction logs unraveled three years of my life in cold, undeniable pixels. There were luxury boutique charges in Aspen, five-star resort spa bookings in Scottsdale, high-end interior design showrooms, and five-figure wire transfers labeled under private cosmetic surgery clinics.

""See these recurring monthly transactions?"" Nathan muttered, tapping a row of dates. ""Every sixteenth of the month, exactly two days after your thirty-five hundred cleared, twelve hundred went straight to a private equestrian lease in Cherry Creek. Who in your family rides horses, Derek?""

""Vanessa,"" I whispered, the word tasting like copper. ""Vanessa took up competitive dressage two years ago. Mom told everyone my sister landed a massive corporate commercial listing that funded it.""

""And look at this,"" Nathan said, clicking into the second card's authorized user list. ""Your mother isn't even the primary user on card two. She added Vanessa as an authorized secondary spender thirty-four months ago. Derek, your thirty-five hundred a month wasn't keeping Harold's hardware store afloat. Your father’s store has never seen this money. You’ve been paying the personal luxury lifestyle tab for your mother and sister while you starved in a one-bedroom rental and drove a car that stalls at red lights.""

I leaned over the counter, clutching the laminate edge until my knuckles turned stark white. For thirty-six months, I had volunteered for graveyard shifts in freezing distribution bays, eaten stale microwave meals, ignored my failing transmission, and let the love of my life walk away because I couldn't afford a future with her. I had bled myself dry under the emotional blackmail that my father's lifelong work was on the brink of collapse. And all the while, my mother had stood in front of family friends and painted me as an incompetent, unemployed moocher.

""Nathan,"" I said, my voice dropping to a low, icy calm. ""Can you trace every payment I made from my checking account to these accounts?""

""Every single penny,"" Nathan replied, opening his auditing toolkit. ""And because you were designated as a third-party bill payer rather than a joint account holder or co-signer, you have clear documentation of where the funds originated. Furthermore, if your mother forged documents or misrepresented the purpose of these accounts to secure private funding from you, that's not just a family dispute. That crosses into actionable financial fraud.""

""Let's not jump to the courthouse yet,"" I said quietly. ""First, I want every single transaction categorized into an official forensic audit report. I want receipts, merchant codes, dates, and account numbers. Bind it into formal presentation dossiers.""

Nathan looked up, a grim smile tugging at his mouth. ""How many copies do you need?""

""Three,"" I said. ""One for Dad, one for Vanessa, and one for Mom's audience.""
