Chapter 19 - The Boy Who Saw What Everyone Missed

I did not tell Dante that his mother's death might be connected to Voss.

Not before speaking with Evelyn.

The allegation was too serious to treat as fact.

Isabella had been elderly. She could have died from natural causes, just as the family had been told.

A threatening phone call, remembered years later by an unreliable witness, was not proof of murder.

But it was enough to deserve investigation.

Evelyn agreed.

"We'll supply the information to the appropriate authorities," she said. "No private revenge. No accusations we can't support."

I nodded.

Then I told Dante.

He listened silently.

When I finished, he stood beside the fireplace for so long that I wondered whether he had heard me.

Finally, he spoke.

"My mother was the only person who told me I didn't have to become my father."

I watched him carefully.

"She believed you could leave that life?"

"Every day."

His voice cracked.

"And I didn't listen until she was gone."

I crossed the room and wrapped my arms around him.

"We still don't know what happened."

He nodded against my hair.

"But we're going to find out."

That evening, I returned to the academy for a family art workshop.

We had decided to continue ordinary activities as safely as possible while the investigation progressed.

The classrooms were crowded with parents, teachers, and children.

Maya was leading a storytelling session in ASL.

Leo sat beside Sophie, his sleeves covered in blue paint.

He had drawn another dragon castle.

This one included a bridge, a garden, and something that looked like a parking lot.

I bent down.

Is your dragon learning to drive?

Leo laughed.

No. That is the school.

He pointed to a small black rectangle near the entrance.

That's the car that came yesterday.

My smile faded.

What car?

He pointed toward the window.

The one with the man who looked at the doors.

My heart began beating harder.

I had not realized Leonardo had seen the stranger who attempted to inspect the alarm system.

Tell me what you noticed.

He studied his drawing.

The man wore a blue jacket. He came to the side door. He looked at the windows.

"That's right," I murmured.

Leo continued.

Then he went behind the building.

I frowned.

You saw that?

He nodded.

From the art room. I was looking for Captain Waffles.

Our security cameras covered the side entrance.

But the rear service courtyard had a narrow blind spot near the deliveries gate.

I had assumed the stranger returned directly to his SUV.

Leo's observation suggested otherwise.

I thanked him and told him he had done the right thing by sharing what he remembered.

Then I contacted Marco.

He reviewed the footage and discovered something unusual.

The stranger had briefly disappeared behind a maintenance shed.

When he reappeared, his clipboard was missing.

Security searched the area.

They found a small electronic device attached to an exterior utility cabinet.

The police collected it for examination.

We did not know exactly what it was intended to do.

But Marco ordered the building's security and alarm contractors to conduct an immediate inspection.

By six-thirty, the workshop was ending.

Parents gathered backpacks.

Children signed goodbyes.

Maya told me the inspection had not found any compromise of the building's primary fire-alarm system.

I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

Perhaps we had caught the threat in time.

Perhaps the stranger had accomplished nothing.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Serafina.

Nathaniel knows I spoke to you. He says you have something that belongs to him.

I stared at the screen.

Before I could reply, a second message appeared.

He mentioned Isabella's letters.

A shiver ran through me.

Only a handful of people knew we had found those documents.

I called Dante.

He answered immediately.

"Clare?"

"Someone has been telling Voss what we're finding."

A pause.

Then his voice hardened.

"Get out of the academy."

I looked around.

Most families had already left.

Maya was helping two younger students collect their art supplies.

Leo and Sophie stood near the classroom door, comparing their drawings.

"Why?"

"Marco just received a warning from the police. A company associated with Harbor Beacon purchased access to an abandoned storage property less than a mile from the school."

"That doesn't prove—"

"Clare, listen to me. There was a suspicious delivery there this morning. The authorities are checking it now. Until we know more, I want everyone away from the building."

I turned toward Maya.

She saw my expression and immediately began directing the remaining families toward the exits.

Then the lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

May you like

A thin ribbon of smoke curled beneath the hallway door.

And every visual fire alarm in the building began flashing bright white.
