Chapter 3 - The Chameleon Mother

The sheer audacity of Judith’s performance left the room in stunned silence for two full seconds. She moved gracefully toward my bed, clutching a designer leather handbag to her chest, her face contorted into an expression of theatrical maternal sorrow that would have earned a standing ovation at any community theater.

""Get away from me,"" I said. My voice was quiet, but it sliced through her performance like a razor blade.

Judith halted mid-step, her lower lip trembling with rehearsed devastation. ""Nora, sweet girl, you’re in shock. Graham, look at her, she’s completely delirious from whatever narcotics they’ve pumped into her. Officers, please understand, Nora has always suffered from severe inner-ear balance issues. We’ve told her for years not to carry heavy things down those steep cellar stairs, but she's so fiercely stubborn...""

""Ma'am, step back against the wall immediately,"" Detective Ramirez commanded, stepping directly between Judith and my bed. ""Who authorized your entry into this restricted room?""

""I am her mother-in-law!"" Judith snapped, a flicker of her true, venomous nature flashing across her sharp jawline before she quickly softened it back into faux fragility. ""And this is my son, Graham Hayes. He is a senior partner at Hayes & Vance Capital. We are prominent members of this township, Officer. There is no need for this theatrical display of police intervention. Nora simply lost her footing because she insists on wearing those ridiculously cheap fashion boots with smooth soles. I was upstairs slicing the roast when I heard the tumble.""

""That is a lie,"" I said, looking straight into Judith’s cold, reptilian eyes. ""You pushed me from behind. You told me the house would only have peace if I stopped turning Graham against you. And then you stood at the top of the stairs and watched me break my ribs against the concrete.""

Judith’s face drained of color for a fraction of a second, but she quickly covered it with a high-pitched, incredulous gasp. ""How dare you! Graham, are you going to stand there and let your wife slander your own mother while I'm sick with worry?""

Graham took a frantic step forward, looking torn between the ferocious gaze of his mother and the hard reality of my injuries. ""Nora, please... you're confused. You hit your head on the banister. Mom was in the dining room with Uncle Richard. You must have tripped over the rug at the landing—""

""Enough,"" Dr. Mercer barked, walking back into the room flanked by two massive hospital security guards. ""This patient is under an active police protection hold. Both of you are trespassing in an emergency medical zone after being explicitly denied visitation. Officers, remove them.""

""You can't kick me out!"" Graham shouted, his veneer finally cracking. ""I pay the health insurance premiums here! I am her legal spouse!""

""Actually, Mr. Hayes,"" Officer Ramirez said, her hand resting firmly on her utility belt, ""you are currently an active person of interest in an obstruction of justice investigation regarding felony domestic assault. If you and your mother do not vacate this trauma ward in five seconds, you will both be transported to the central holding facility in handcuffs. Move.""

Judith grabbed Graham’s forearm, her manicured nails digging deep into his coat sleeve. The sorrowful grandmother mask was gone now. In its place was the sneering, aristocratic bully I had known in private for four miserable years.

""Come along, Graham,"" Judith hissed, glaring down at me with pure venom. ""Let her play the dramatic victim. Let’s see how far her little victim act takes her when she realizes who pays the mortgage on that house, who funds her lifestyle, and whose name is on the deed. You won't see a single dime, Nora. Not one red cent.""

""Out!"" the security guard commanded, physically herding them backward into the corridor.

As the curtain was pulled shut again, cutting off Judith’s furious footsteps and Graham’s frantic pleading, my heart was racing at a dangerous rhythm. Dr. Mercer immediately checked the IV line and adjusted the monitor.

""Deep, slow breaths, Nora,"" he said calmly. ""Your blood pressure is spiking. Focus on your breathing.""

""Doctor..."" I gasped, clenching my fists against the bedsheets as a sharp cramp tore through my lower pelvis. ""Something hurts. Low down.""

Dr. Mercer’s face became instantly serious. He pulled up the sheet and checked the drainage pads beneath me. When he looked up, his expression was urgent.

""The hemorrhage has progressed,"" he told the nurse. ""Call OB-GYN down stat. Prepare an emergency ultrasound and high-dose progesterone drip. We need to stabilize this pregnancy right now.""
