Chapter 6 - The Legal Ambush

Three weeks after signing the manufacturing contract with Vance Biocosmetics, the first commercial batch of Luxe was scheduled for national online launch.

We had produced one hundred thousand units, housed in minimalist frosted glass bottles with brushed-gold caps, each featuring my mother’s signature embossed in gold foil.

The pre-launch waiting list had surged past eight hundred thousand customers worldwide.

On a rainy Thursday afternoon, I sat in Marcus Vance’s corporate conference room with Mrs. Kim and Evelyn Sterling, reviewing the logistics for the midnight website launch.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the conference room swung open without warning.

My father, Richard Hart, strode in, looking disheveled in an ill-fitting suit he had bought for a funeral five years ago.

Behind him marched Diane, wearing an oversized faux-fur coat, clutching a designer handbag that looked like a cheap knockoff, and an aggressive young lawyer carrying a leather briefcase.

"Lily!" Diane shrieked, pointing a manicured, trembling finger across the table.

"You think you can sneak behind our backs and sell our family's assets to a billionaire?!"

"We took care of you for twenty-one years! That formula was perfected in our garage, using our electricity and our roof!"

"Under Ohio marital property and residential accession laws, Richard Hart is the fifty percent owner of all intellectual property produced on his premises!"

My father stepped forward, his eyes darting nervously around the luxurious mahogany-and-glass boardroom.

He looked thinner, his hair grayer, and the weakness around his mouth was more pronounced than ever.

"Lily, honey," my father said, his voice dropping into that wheedling, manipulative tone he used whenever he wanted to avoid an argument.

"We don't want to hurt you. Diane and I just want what's fair."

"We raised you. We supported your little experiments."

"We can settle this today. Put my name on the corporate filings, give us thirty percent, and we will drop the lawsuits."

"We can be a real family again, Lil."

I sat completely still, not moving a single muscle, looking at the man who had turned his phone facedown while I stood in the rain.

"Did you find a place to sleep on your birthday, Lily?" I asked quietly, my voice slicing through the tense room like a scalpel.

My father blinked, caught completely off guard. "What?"

"At twelve-thirty-seven in the morning on my twenty-first birthday, I called you twice," I said, looking straight into his eyes.

"The shelter downtown was full. The rain was freezing."

"I asked for the couch for six hours. I promised to leave before breakfast."

"You looked at my name on the screen, Dad."

"And you turned the phone facedown."

Richard’s face drained of every drop of color, turning a sickly, mottled gray.

"Lily... I... the phone was on silent... I didn't know—"

"Brooke told me, Dad," I interrupted, my voice dropping to a whisper that commanded absolute silence.

"Brooke watched you do it."

Diane scoffed, crossing her arms and stepping in front of my father defensively.

"That has nothing to do with commercial contract law! Emotional sob stories don't stand up in court!"

"Mr. Vance, if you don't settle with us today, we are filing an emergency commercial injunction that will freeze your product launch at midnight!"

Evelyn Sterling slowly stood up from her chair, pushing her reading glasses up her nose.

She pulled out a thick, red-tabbed legal dossier and tossed it squarely onto the center of the table.

"Diane Hart," Evelyn said, her legal baritone ringing with icy authority.

"Before you file another fraudulent motion, allow me to review your liabilities."

"Six years ago, upon the death of Anna Hart, you and Richard failed to probate her personal holographic estate."

"Under Anna's original handwritten will, witnessed by three nurses at Bethesda North Hospital,"

"All personal notebooks, research files, and future royalty rights were bequeathed exclusively to her biological daughter, Lily Hart."

"Furthermore, we have filed a formal criminal complaint with the Hamilton County prosecutor for conversion of estate assets, including eighty thousand dollars in life insurance payouts that Richard Hart unlawfully diverted into your personal mortgage."

Diane gasped, clutching her fur coat as if she had been physically slapped.

"What?! That money was for household expenses!"

"That money was held in a constructive minor's trust for Lily's nursing tuition," Evelyn countered coldly.

"And if you do not sign this unconditional waiver of claims within five minutes,"

"The sheriff's department will execute an asset freeze on your suburban house by five o'clock today."
