Chapter 5 - The Wedding Gift

By 1:00 PM, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was still decorated with the remnants of our extravagant wedding reception.
Towering arrangements of white calla lilies, ice sculptures of intertwined swans, and tables covered in Belgian lace stood beneath the gilded ceilings.
A press conference had been hastily arranged by Whitmore Forensic Technologies' media division, drawing dozens of journalists, corporate directors, and television cameras.
The city believed the conference was called to announce the tragic, sudden death of one of Chicago’s brightest tech billionaires.
The double oak doors at the back of the ballroom opened, and a breathless hush fell over the room.
I walked down the center carpeted aisle, dressed in a bespoke charcoal three-piece suit, my posture upright, my gaze unyielding.
Beside me walked my mother, Margaret, elegant and serene, her arm linked securely in mine.
The sound of sixty cameras clicking simultaneously sounded like a storm of hail against glass.
"Mr. Whitmore! You're alive?!" a reporter from the Chicago Tribune shouted, leaping out of his seat.
"There were reports from the coroner's office—"
I raised my right hand, and the room silenced instantly.
"Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated," I said, stepping up to the bank of microphones on the mahogany podium.
"However, the criminal conspiracy orchestrated under the cover of my wedding was entirely real."
Daniel Reeves stepped forward, connecting an encrypted laptop to the two massive presentation screens flanking the stage.
The monitors flickered to life, displaying high-definition surveillance footage from the bridal suite at 2:00 AM.
The entire press corps watched in stunned horror as Vanessa and Adrian stood beside my unconscious body on the bed, laughing as they checked the poison vial.
The audio, captured by the hidden micro-sensors I had installed in the headboard three days before the ceremony, played with crystal clarity:
"Burn his body before noon. No autopsy. Once we transfer the assets, we can deal with his mother."
Gasps erupted across the ballroom as reporters furiously typed on their tablets and laptops.
"The marriage was fraudulent from its inception," I announced, looking directly into the primary broadcast lens.

"Vanessa Cole was legally married to Adrian Cole in Nevada five years ago, a union that was never dissolved."
"Every asset transfer they attempted has been intercepted, frozen, and turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation."
