Chapter 2 - The Fortress at Lake Forest

Forty miles north of the morgue, heavy morning fog rolled off Lake Michigan, swallowing the sprawling gardens of the Whitmore ancestral manor.

Inside the limestone estate, Margaret Whitmore sat in her sunroom, dressed in an emerald wool cardigan, holding a silver cup of herbal tea.

Across the low glass table sat Adrian Cole, wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit, checking his gold wristwatch every two minutes.

"Drink your tea, Margaret," Adrian urged, his voice coated in smooth, rehearsed warmth.

"The stress of the wedding was too much for your heart. Vanessa sent this special blend from our private cellar to stabilize your arrhythmia."

Margaret set the porcelain cup back down onto its saucer with a delicate, porcelain click.

"Vanessa is extraordinarily thoughtful, Adrian," Margaret said softly, her dark eyes observant and steady behind gold-rimmed spectacles.

"Though I find it peculiar that she hasn't answered her personal phone since dawn."

Adrian smiled—a thin, plastic expression that never reached his eyes.

"She’s devastated, Margaret. Ethan took ill during the night. She’s with the specialists in the city, trying to keep the press away from the family."

Margaret leaned back in her high-backed chair, folding her hands calmly in her lap.

"My son has survived three corporate takeovers, an international kidnapping attempt in Zurich, and two hostile proxy wars, Adrian."

"He doesn't collapse from simple exhaustion on his wedding night."

Adrian’s jaw tightened, the mask of polite concern beginning to crack around the edges.

"Life is fragile, Mrs. Whitmore. Sometimes a weak heart gives out when you least expect it."

He reached across the table, nudging the teacup closer to her fingers.

"Take another sip. You need your strength for the asset transfer documents later this afternoon."

Before Margaret could touch the cup, the heavy glass doors of the sunroom slid open with a violent rush of cold lake air.

Four men in tactical black vests, carrying high-caliber carbines, stepped into the room in absolute synchronization.

Daniel Reeves, my chief of security and a former federal intelligence operative, stepped through the center of the unit.

"Step away from the table, Mr. Cole," Daniel commanded, his sidearm raised and locked onto Adrian's chest.

Adrian froze, his hand hovering over the silver tea tray.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Adrian barked, rising to his feet. "I am family! I will have you fired by noon!"

Daniel didn't flinch.

"You aren't family, Adrian," Daniel said coldly.

"And the tea you just poured contains eighteen milligrams of liquid digitalis."
