Chapter 3 - The Golden Cage

The ceremony took place at three in the morning in the penthouse study, witnessed only by a corrupt judge on Vincent's payroll and two armed bodyguards whose eyes never left the reinforced doors. By the time dawn bled across the Manhattan skyline in shades of gray and sickly gold, the papers were signed.
I was officially Emily Blackwood.
When the sun finally climbed above the skyscrapers, news of the wedding broke like an earthquake. The tabloid media erupted with hysterical headlines: MAFIA HEIR MARRIES MYSTERY MAID AFTER BALLROOM SHOOTOUT! But beneath the scandalous gossip was a darker undercurrent. The underworld knew Arthur Blackwood was hunting for his son's new bride, and every hitman between Brooklyn and Boston was sharpening their knives.
I sat on the white velvet sofa in Vincent’s master bedroom, wrapped in a black silk robe, with the Riverside dossier spread across my lap. The files were devastating.
Crime scene photographs showed the charred skeletal remains of the arena where I had spent twelve hours a day since I was six years old. But what caught my breath was the financial audit hidden in the back. Arthur Blackwood hadn't just torched the arena to kill a politician; he had taken out a fifty-million-dollar insurance policy on the property just two weeks prior. And the lead investigator who declared it an ""accidental electrical failure"" was currently the Chief of Police.
The door swung open, and Vincent walked in, wearing a crisp charcoal suit, his dark hair slicked back. He carried a silver tray with fresh coffee and an omelet, setting it down on the table beside me with surprising domesticity.
""Eat,"" he ordered, checking his gold wristwatch. ""In two hours, we hold a press conference at the Plaza Hotel.""
I looked up, stunned. ""A press conference? Arthur has every assassin in the state looking for me! You want to put me in front of hundreds of cameras?""
""Precisely,"" Vincent said, leaning against the marble mantle with a smug smirk. ""Arthur operates in the shadows. He kills with quiet car crashes, poison, and staged arena fires. If the entire world knows your face, if every major news outlet is broadcasting your survival as the lost Olympic star Emily Carter, Arthur cannot touch you without bringing the FBI, Interpol, and the United States government down on his head.""
""You want to weaponize my identity,"" I realized, the puzzle pieces falling into place.
""I want to protect my investment,"" he corrected, his voice dropping into that dark, magnetic cadence that made my chest tighten. ""You wanted justice. I want my father dead. Our interests are aligned, darling.""
Before I could answer, his phone buzzed violently on the glass table. Vincent picked it up, glancing at the caller ID before sliding it to speaker.
""Vincent,"" a shrill, hysterical voice screamed through the receiver. It was Vanessa. ""You ruined my life! You left me in that ballroom for a servant girl! Do you have any idea what your father is planning? He came to my apartment, Vincent! He took my brother!""
Vincent’s posture stiffened instantly, the casual swagger evaporating into predator stillness. ""Where is he, Vanessa?""
""He said... he said if you don't bring the girl to the old warehouse at Pier 42 by noon, he will send you my brother's head in a cooler!"" she sobbed. ""And then he's coming for your mother’s clinic!""
Vincent’s knuckles turned white around the phone. His jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would shatter. ""Arthur touched my mother’s clinic?""
""He has men outside right now!"" Vanessa wept. ""Vincent, please, just give him the maid! She's nobody!""
Vincent terminated the call without another word. The room temperature seemed to drop twenty degrees.
""Your mother?"" I asked carefully, standing up from the sofa.
""Arthur divorced her twenty years ago when she refused to launder his drug money,"" Vincent said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion, which made it terrifying. ""She runs a free medical clinic in the Bronx. If he touches a hair on her head, I will skin him alive.""

""It's a trap, Vincent. He wants you out of this fortress.""
Vincent turned to me, his blue eyes ablaze with raw vengeance. ""Of course it's a trap. And we are going to walk right through the front door.""
