Chapter 9 - The Sovereign Vow

Gabriel pulled out a small, square jeweler's box made of dark green velvet and set it gently on my desk blotter.

My breath caught in my throat as my pulse began to hammer against my ribs.

He didn't open the box immediately. He reached out, taking both of my hands into his large, calloused palms, his touch warm, steady, and utterly grounding.

“Four months ago,” Gabriel began, his deep baritone voice carrying a raw, unguarded reverence, “I was bleeding to death in a crowded, indifferent trauma ward.”

I looked up into his chiseled face, seeing the faint, rugged lines around his eyes that only appeared when he looked at me.

“I had spent twenty years conquering this city, Emma,” he continued softly. “I thought power was measured in fear, in territory, and in the number of men who bowed their heads when I walked through a door.”

He gently turned my hands over, tracing the faint calluses on my fingers with his thumb.

“Then a tired nurse in wrinkled scrubs stood over my gurney, refused my money, and held my life in her hands without asking for anything in return.”

A single tear spilled over my cheek, warm and liberating.

“You healed my body, Emma,” Gabriel whispered, his voice trembling with honest emotion. “And then you gave me something I thought was dead forever: a reason to live with honor.”

Gabriel slowly sank onto one knee on the hardwood floor of my office, pressing the golden latch on the velvet box.

The lid swung open to reveal a magnificent platinum ring featuring a flawless, emerald-cut four-carat diamond, flanked by two deep-blue sapphires that sparkled like the evening ocean under the desk lamp.

“I don't want to walk this city alone anymore, Emma,” Gabriel said, looking straight into my soul.

“I want you as my partner, my equal, my conscience, and my wife. Will you marry me?”

The tears flowed freely down my cheeks, but they weren't tears of fear, grief, or exhaustion.

They were tears of radiant, uncontainable joy.

I dropped to my knees on the floor right in front of him, throwing my arms around his broad shoulders and burying my face into his neck.

“Yes, Gabriel,” I breathed against his skin. “A thousand times, yes.”

Gabriel let out a long, ragged breath of pure, profound relief, wrapping his powerful arms around my waist and lifting me into the air as he stood up.

He kissed me deeply—a slow, fierce, and passionate embrace that washed away every lingering shadow of the burned apartment, the poisoned blade, and the cold hospital shifts.

He slid the platinum ring onto my finger—a perfect, effortless fit—then pulled me back against his chest, holding me as if he would never let me go.

Outside my office windows, parked along the promenade below, were forty black Escalades, their amber running lights glowing in the twilight.

Two hundred men stood in silent, protective vigil beneath the blooming cherry trees, guarding the fortress of their king and his new queen.
