Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guest

We didn't stay in the lobby to watch him leave. The moment Vance cleared the doors, I grabbed Emily by the elbow and marched our family directly into the director’s office, locking the door behind us. The center director, a retired social worker named Arthur whom I had known from church for over a decade, sprang out of his chair in alarm.

""Martha? Emily? Good heavens, what happened to you all? You look like you've been running for your lives!"" Arthur gasped, reaching for a box of tissues as Emily collapsed into an armchair, weeping hysterically while hugging the twins to her chest.

""Arthur, lock that door and don't ask questions yet,"" I said firmly, my hands shaking as I reached into Emily’s tote bag and pulled out the blue waterproof folder. ""We need a secure phone line, and we need an unlisted contact number for the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s financial crimes division in Chicago. Right now.""

Arthur took one look at my face, saw the absolute terror in his longtime friend's eyes, and nodded without hesitation. He picked up his desk phone, dialed an unlisted direct line to a contact he kept from his days working with state protective services, and handed the receiver to me. Within five minutes, I was speaking directly to Special Agent Sarah Lin, a lead investigator who had spent the last fourteen months trying to build a racketeering case against Marcus Vance and his shell corporations.

""Mrs. Hayes?"" Lin’s voice was crisp, razor-sharp, and completely devoid of hesitation. ""Did you say you have Julian Hayes’s original blue ledger and thumb drive?""

""I have them in my hands,"" I stated, staring down at the blue plastic casing. ""And Marcus Vance cornered us at the community center ten minutes ago. He threatened my grandchildren's lives. He gave us until midnight to meet him at the river pier.""

""Do not move from that building,"" Agent Lin ordered immediately. ""Vance’s primary enforcer was arrested two hours ago trying to board a flight to Panama. Vance doesn't have an army left; he’s desperate, he’s liquidating his assets, and he’s trying to retrieve those files before our warrant is signed. We have tactical units fifteen minutes away from your location. Stay locked in that office until my agents present their credentials.""

For the first time in what felt like an eternity, Emily exhaled a shuddering breath that wasn't choked with dread. Noah sat on Arthur’s small office rug, coloring with a box of crayons Arthur had produced from his desk, carefully drawing a house with a green roof and a big sun in the corner. The twins had fallen asleep across the office sofa, exhausted by the cold run through the woods.

Yet, despite Agent Lin’s assurances, an icy knot remained deep in my stomach. Marcus Vance was cornered, and a cornered predator was the most unpredictable creature on earth. He had brazenly walked into a community center; he wouldn't simply sit on an abandoned pier and wait for the FBI to surround him.

Suddenly, the lights in the administrative office flickered once, twice, and died completely. The hum of the building's ventilation system groaned to a halt, plunging the entire room into total, suffocating darkness.

From the hallway outside the locked office door came the heavy, deliberate crunch of glass breaking, followed by the slow, echoing thud of heavy boot steps walking across the linoleum floor.
