Chapter 5 - A Father’s Ghost

The crowded lobby of the community center was the only thing preventing Marcus Vance from dropping his veneer of polished civility. Parents were chatting just thirty feet away by the administrative desks, and two teenage basketball players were laughing by the water fountains. Vance knew it, and we knew it. But the sheer menace radiating from his posture was suffocating.

""What do you want, Marcus?"" Emily demanded, pulling all three children behind her back like a lioness shielding her cubs. Her voice shook, but she refused to step backward.

""You know precisely what I want, my dear,"" Vance replied smoothly, stopping five paces away and tilting his head with an unsettling smirk. ""Julian made a very foolish mistake. He thought he could steal from men who don't tolerate thieves, and then he thought he could use you as an insurance policy. Hand over the drive and the ledger, and this unfortunate misunderstanding ends today. You keep your lovely home, the children keep their mother, and Julian remains an unpleasant memory.""

""Julian is dead, isn't he?"" Emily asked, her voice cracking with raw emotion. ""You killed him.""

Vance’s expression didn't change; his gray eyes remained as flat as polished stone. ""Julian made choices that carried predictable consequences. But you have three very compelling reasons to make better choices than he did."" His eyes flickered down toward Noah, Oliver, and Lily, lingering with deliberate cruelty.

A wave of white-hot anger surged through me, overpowering every shred of fear I had harbored all afternoon. I stepped around Emily, placing myself directly between Vance and my grandchildren.

""Listen to me, you miserable coward,"" I snarled, pitching my voice just loud enough to turn the heads of two nearby teachers. ""You broke into my home. You terrified my grandson. If you take one more step toward these children, I will scream this building down, and every camera in this facility will record you committing a federal felony. We know what’s on that drive. We know about the dummy accounts in Grand Cayman, the construction kickbacks, and the payoffs to County Commissioner Bradley. You think you're hunting us? You’re the one running out of time.""

I had bluffed, pulling Bradley's name from Julian's old political boasting years ago, but the reaction was instantaneous. Vance’s smug smile vanished. His jaw tightened so hard I could hear the grinding of his teeth, and a flash of genuine panic registered in his eyes.

""You have no idea what you're meddling in, old woman,"" he hissed under his breath.

""I know enough to know that a woman with nothing left to lose is far more dangerous than a criminal with an offshore bank account,"" I replied, glaring directly into his eyes without flinching.

Vance glanced nervously over his shoulder. The receptionist at the front desk was now watching us intently, her hand hovering over the telephone console after noticing the mud on our clothes and the hostility in our posture. Vance realized the public spectacle was slipping beyond his control. He slowly withdrew a sleek smartphone from his coat, tapped the screen once, and looked back at Emily.

""You have until midnight to bring that folder to the old industrial pier on the river,"" he murmured, his voice dropping into a lethal register. ""If you contact the authorities, or if you aren't there when the clock strikes twelve, I won't come for you. I’ll come for the school bus tomorrow morning.""

He turned on his heel and strode purposefully out the double glass doors, disappearing into the evening gloom.
