Chapter 8 - The Falling Empire

Deprived of George’s behind-the-scenes management, the Vance Corporation crumbled with shocking velocity.

For seven years, I had quietly managed their supply chains, renegotiated predatory contracts, and covered up the scandalous recklessness of Willow’s younger brother. Without that invisible shield, every single structural flaw erupted simultaneously. Creditors began demanding immediate settlements. Several prominent directors resigned, leaking evidence of financial embezzlement directly to the federal trade commission.

Makoto Wang, furious over his ruined career, sold an exclusive tell-all interview to a major network, detailing Willow’s erratic behavior, her abusive private tantrums, and her deranged obsession with a dead man. The public turned on her overnight.

Meanwhile, Audrey’s health had achieved a complete recovery.

Sitting in the sunlit penthouse kitchen on a crisp autumn morning, Audrey wore an oversized cashmere sweater, watching me flip French toast on the skillet. The corporate ice queen had melted entirely behind closed doors. Her grey eyes were bright, warm, and constantly tracking my movements with unmistakable tenderness.

""The Vance Corporation filed for bankruptcy restructuring this morning,"" Audrey announced, setting down her morning tablet. ""Their board of directors voted to strip Willow of all executive authority. She locked herself in her villa and refused to sign the paperwork.""

I slid a plate of golden toast and fresh berries in front of her, pouring a cup of warm almond milk. ""It has nothing to do with us anymore.""

Audrey caught my wrist before I could pull my hand away. Her skin was warm, vibrant with life. She pulled me gently down until I was level with her gaze.

""The twelve-month contract expires next week, George,"" she said softly, her thumb brushing against my pulse point. ""You fulfilled every term. You saved my life, saved my company, and gave me a home. Are you going to take your settlement money and disappear?""

I looked into her clear, steady eyes. There was no madness here. No manipulation, no games of hot and cold, no cruel demands for blind devotion. There was only mutual respect, safety, and an affection that had grown organically from quiet mornings and shared battles.

""Only if you throw me out,"" I smiled, leaning in until my forehead rested gently against hers. ""Otherwise, I was planning on asking you for a lifetime extension.""

Audrey’s breath hitched, and she pulled me down into a soft, lingering kiss that tasted like morning honey and sweet relief.
