Chapter 9 - The Trial of the Heart

Tears welled up in Nigel’s eyes, spilling over his crescent-shaped scar. His chest hitched, but he remained silent, taking every blow of my words.
""You hid behind a fake name,"" I continued, my voice softening as the bitter edges began to melt into raw vulnerability. ""You hid behind the identity of 'Dr. Nigel Vance,' the miraculous savior, because you were terrified that if I saw Leo, the scared little boy who ran away, I would realize he wasn't strong enough to love me.""
""I was terrified you would hate me,"" he choked out, his voice cracking completely. ""I couldn't survive your hatred, Clara. I swear to God, I couldn't.""
""Well, I did hate you,"" I said plainly. ""For three weeks, I hated you with every fiber of my being. I hated that you lied to me. I hated that our wedding vows were spoken under a false pretense. I hated that you thought about leaving me blind just to keep your secret safe.""
Nigel dropped his head into his hands, weeping openly, his entire body shuddering with twenty years of repressed agony. ""I'm sorry. I'm so sorry, Clara. If I could tear out my own eyes and give them to you, if I could turn back time and jump under that swing myself, I would do it a thousand times over.""
I reached out. For the first time since the surgery bandages had come off, my hand touched his face intentionally.
My fingers traced the crescent scar across his eyebrow. It felt identical to how it looked. It was no longer a symbol of terror; it was simply a mark of human frailty. A scar carried by a frightened child who had spent his entire adulthood trying to repair the world he thought he had ruined.
Nigel froze at my touch, his breath catching in his throat as if he were afraid to move.
""I read your journal, Leo,"" I whispered softly.
He looked up through red, swollen eyes. ""You did?""
""Every word,"" I said, tears finally slipping down my own cheeks. ""And do you know what I realized? The boy who ran away twenty years ago was a coward. But the man who spent fourteen years pioneering an impossible microsurgical technique just to give me back the sun... that man is the most stubborn, dedicated, ridiculous person I have ever known.""
""Clara... what are you saying?"" he asked, his hands trembling as they hovered near my waist, wanting desperately to hold me but terrified of overstepping.
May you like
""I am saying that I fell in love with a man who read me books until his voice cracked,"" I said, stepping firmly into his arms and wrapping my hands around the back of his neck. ""I fell in love with a man who held me in the delivery room, who kissed my forehead when I was scared, who loved my mind and my spirit long before he could ever fix my eyes. Nigel was a lie. But your love was never a lie.""
Nigel let out a ragged, broken gasp, wrapping his arms tightly around my back, burying his face into my shoulder as if he were finally coming home after an endless exile in the cold. He wept with a ferocity that shook both of our bodies, washing away two decades of guilt, shame, and silence into the fabric of my coat.
