Chapter 8 - The Confrontation

I burst through the double doors of the ophthalmic surgery wing, ignoring the startled looks of the nursing staff. I marched down the familiar hallway—a corridor I had walked dozens of times holding a cane, now navigating with sharp, burning sight.
I reached Nigel’s corner office. The door was slightly ajar.
Inside, the bookshelves were bare. Cardboard boxes were stacked neatly near the window. Nigel was standing over his desk, taping shut the final box. He looked gaunt, wearing an ill-fitting gray sweater, his shoulders sunken in absolute defeat.
I pushed the door open, the wood hitting the wall with a loud bang.
Nigel whipped around, startled. When his eyes met mine, the color completely drained from his face. ""Clara? What... how did you get here? Did Hannah drive you?""
""I drove myself,"" I said firmly, walking into the room and closing the door behind me.
His jaw dropped. ""You drove? Clara, your depth perception isn't fully calibrated! That was incredibly reckless, you could have—""
""Shut up, Nigel,"" I snapped, cutting him off mid-sentence. ""Just shut your mouth for once and stop acting like my doctor.""
He blinked, paralyzed by my tone.
I walked right up to his desk, took his heavy roll of packing tape, and tossed it into the trash can. Then, I slammed both hands onto the cardboard box he had just sealed.
""What do you think you're doing?"" I demanded. ""Africa? Resigning your license? Giving up your children? Is this your grand finale? The tragic hero banishing himself to the desert to atone for his sins?""
Nigel flinched, looking away toward the gray clouds gathering outside the window. ""I have no right to be here, Clara. Every time you look at me, you see the rock that stole twenty years of your life. Every time Toby looks at me, he sees the man who made his mother cry. If I stay here, I will just be a ghost haunting your new life. You deserve a fresh start. You can see now. You can travel, you can meet someone who never lied to you, someone who doesn't carry blood on his hands.""
""You arrogant, cowardly idiot,"" I whispered, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and grief.
He looked back at me, stunned. ""Clara...""
""You think this is about you!"" I stepped around the desk, invading his personal space until our chests were inches apart. ""You think you're the only one who gets to decide how this story ends! You spent twenty years obsessing over my darkness, turning it into your personal Greek tragedy. But did you ever stop to think about what my life was actually like?""
May you like
Nigel swallowed hard, unable to speak.
""I didn't spend the last twenty years sitting in a room weeping, Nigel!"" I said fiercely. ""I graduated with honors! I made incredible friends! I built a career! I loved my life, even without sight! You thought you broke me into pieces that day on the playground, but you didn't break me. You just changed my path. The only person who was completely destroyed by that rock... was you.""
