Chapter 4 - The Shattered Glass

I stood up from the booth so violently that my knee clipped the edge of the laminate table, causing the glass water goblet to wobble, slide off the edge, and shatter onto the hardwood floor with an explosive crash.

The entire diner fell dead silent. Patrons turned their heads to stare at the tall stranger in the expensive dark coat who looked as though he had just witnessed a ghost.

Claire instinctively pulled both toddlers behind her legs, shielding them with her body as her protective motherly instincts kicked in. ""Is everyone alright over there?"" she asked, stepping forward with a napkin. ""Don't move, sir, there's broken glass—""

She looked up.

Her sentence died in her throat. The color drained from Claire's face so rapidly that for a terrifying second, I thought she was going to faint. Her warm brown eyes dilated in pure horror and disbelief. Her hands began to tremble violently at her sides.

""Alexander?"" she whispered. The name sounded like a curse on her lips.

""Claire..."" My voice was barely a croak, choked with an avalanche of guilt, shock, and grief.

Noah and Lily peeked out from behind Claire’s denim apron, their big gray eyes studying me with wide, innocent curiosity. ""Mama, who is the tall man?"" Lily asked softly, tugging at Claire’s sweater.

Claire didn't answer. Her gaze snapped from my face down to her children, and a look of primal panic washed over her features. She immediately scooped both toddlers into her arms, holding their weight effortlessly, and turned toward the silver-haired woman.

""Martha, take them into the back office right now,"" Claire ordered, her voice trembling but firm. ""Lock the door. Do not let anyone in.""

""Claire, what's going on? Who is this?"" Martha asked, looking suspiciously at my tailored suit and polished demeanor.

""Please, Martha! Just take them!""

Martha took the children, casting a glare at me before disappearing behind the swinging kitchen doors.

I took a step forward, completely uncaring of the shattered glass crunching beneath my leather oxfords. ""Claire, please. Wait. Look at me.""

""Get out,"" she said. It wasn't a shout. It was a cold, razor-sharp whisper that cut deeper than any scream could have. ""Get out of this town, Alexander. Get out of my life.""

""Claire, they're mine,"" I said, tears burning the backs of my eyes for the first time since my father died fifteen years ago. ""Noah and Lily... they have my eyes. They're my son and daughter.""

""They are my children!"" Claire fiercely fired back, her eyes flashing with pure fury. ""You don't get to call them yours! You don't have a son. You don't have a daughter. You made sure of that when you poisoned our marriage, remembered? You made sure you never had anything tying you down!""

Several local fishermen in nearby booths began standing up, their burly frames shifting protectively toward Claire.

""Hey mister, is this guy bothering you, Claire?"" a bearded man in a plaid flannel growled, stepping into the aisle between us.

""I'm her husband,"" I snapped, slipping into my commanding boardroom tone out of sheer defensive panic.

""You are my ex-husband,"" Claire corrected sharply, addressing the entire room. ""He is nobody to me. Dave, please escort him out before I call the sheriff.""

""You heard the lady, pal,"" Dave said, crossing his thick arms. ""Walk away, or we'll help you find the door.""

I looked at Claire. Her hands were clenched into tight fists, tears spilling over her lashes, but her posture was unyielding. I realized that if I forced the issue right now, I would destroy any fragile hope of ever speaking to her again.

""I'm not leaving this town, Claire,"" I said softly, stepping backward toward the exit. ""We need to talk. We have to talk about what happened.""

May you like

""There is nothing to talk about,"" she said, wiping her tears with the back of her flour-dusted wrist. ""You put a price tag on our life together, Alexander. $150 million. Now take your money and stay the hell away from my babies.""

I turned and walked out into the cold fog, my soul shattered into a million pieces.
