Chapter 7 - The Disaster Unfolds

While peace reigned at Lake Champlain, thirty miles south in Burlington, Claudia’s manufactured holiday was collapsing under the weight of its own hubris. I didn't hear about the details until Friday morning, when Owen arrived at my cottage unannounced, carrying a Tupperware container filled with homemade turkey stuffing and a grin that stretched from ear to ear.
He stomped the snow off his heavy boots on the porch, shook off his winter coat, and walked into the warm kitchen, setting the container down on the counter. ""I figured you might want a little traditional Thanksgiving flavor, even if you ran away from the circus.""
I laughed and pulled him into a fierce, grateful hug. ""You drove all the way up here in the snow just to bring me stuffing?""
""And to give you the front-row report of the Great Miller Thanksgiving Catastrophe of 2026,"" Owen said, pulling up a kitchen stool. ""Mom, you have no idea what went down yesterday. It was legendary. People will be talking about this in Burlington for the next twenty years.""
I poured him a mug of hot coffee and leaned against the counter, suddenly intensely curious despite myself. ""Tell me.""
""Well,"" Owen began, his eyes dancing with amusement, ""Claudia tried to squeeze all twenty-two people into her Craftsman house. But remember how she insisted on having that massive, open-concept kitchen island installed last spring? The one with the waterfall marble edge that takes up eighty percent of the room?""
""Yes, she paid an absolute fortune for it.""
""Right. Well, because of that island, there was literally nowhere to put the two eight-foot folding tables Reed brought home. They ended up having to set up the tables in a giant 'L' shape that blocked the hallway, trapped Eleanor in the powder room for twenty minutes, and forced half the guests to eat with their plates balanced on their knees in the living room.""
""Oh, good heavens,"" I murmured, shaking my head.
""It gets worse, Mom. So much worse. Claudia bought three pre-cooked turkey breasts from the gourmet market, but because she’s never actually cooked a full meal in her life without you standing over her shoulder directing traffic, she had no idea how to time the reheating. She put all three breasts in her fancy convection oven at four hundred degrees while she was busy yelling at Reed to find extra folding chairs. By the time Eleanor noticed smoke pouring out of the kitchen vents, the turkeys were essentially charcoal briquettes on the outside and ice blocks on the inside.""
""What did they eat?""
""Chinese takeout,"" Owen burst out laughing. ""At six o'clock on Thanksgiving evening, Reed had to drive across town to the Golden Dragon—the only place open in Chittenden County—and buy forty egg rolls, twenty orders of beef fried rice, and eight quarts of wonton soup. Eleanor was so furious she refused to sit down. She stood in the foyer with her coat on, eating sweet-and-sour chicken out of a cardboard container, telling everyone who would listen that this was what happened when families lacked proper traditional leadership.""
""And Claudia?"" I asked softly, a strange mixture of pity and vindication washing over me.
May you like
""Claudia broke down in tears around seven,"" Owen said, his tone softening slightly. ""She locked herself in the master bathroom and wouldn't come out. Eleanor and her daughter left early to go back to their hotel. Reed was left alone to clean up twenty-two greasy takeout containers, three burnt turkeys, and a house covered in spilled sweet-and-sour sauce. Leo and the twins told me this morning that it was the weirdest Thanksgiving of their lives, but Leo actually said the egg rolls were better than turkey anyway.""
Owen took a slow sip of his coffee, looking at me carefully. ""She knows she ruined it, Mom. She tried to blame you at first, but Reed actually lost his temper with her for the first time in their marriage. He told her right in front of his sister that none of this would have happened if she had just respected your boundaries in the first place.""
