Chapter 1 - The Patriarch's Summons

Richard Moretti's deep, commanding voice came through the receiver like thunder rumbling over Lake Michigan.

"Claire, do not sign a single piece of paper with your attorney until you arrive at the estate," Richard ordered without greeting me.

"Bring your legal counsel with you, because today, Vincent is going to learn the true cost of humiliating this family."

Before I could answer, the line went dead, leaving a hollow dial tone buzzing in my ear.

I lowered the phone and looked across the desk at Nathan Brooks, whose sharp hazel eyes were watching my expression closely.

Nathan had been top of our class at Northwestern Law, and he knew the ruthless dynamics of Chicago’s old-money dynasties better than anyone.

“What did Richard say?” Nathan asked, his gold fountain pen poised over my unsigned divorce petition.

“He told me not to sign anything yet,” I answered, feeling a chill trace down my spine.

“He said to bring you with me to the Lake Forest mansion immediately.”

Nathan tapped the cap of his pen against the polished mahogany desk, his eyebrows furrowing thoughtfully.

“Richard Moretti built Moretti Holdings with an iron fist, Claire.

If five hundred employees saw your message, the company stock will take a beating when the market opens tomorrow.

He isn't calling this meeting to comfort you; he’s calling it to stop the bleeding before Wall Street smells blood.”

“I don't care about their stock price, Nathan,” I said firmly, rising from the leather chair.

“Vincent made his bed with Sophia Carter at the Drake Hotel, and he can lie in it.

I’m going to that house to hand him his freedom on a silver platter.”

Nathan slid my files into his leather briefcase, clicked the brass locks shut, and stood up to join me.

“Then I’m coming as your official representation, Claire.

The Moretti family doesn't respect tears or hurt feelings, but they respect legal ironclad boundaries.”

We took Nathan’s town car north along the shoreline, passing gray winter waves crashing against the rocky breakwaters.

My phone vibrated continuously in my purse, lighting up with frantic messages from Vincent.

“Claire, pick up the phone! What were you thinking posting that on the company network?”

“Sophia had nothing to do with this! You’re ruining my career over paranoid delusions!”

“Meet me at the house right now so we can fix this before Father cuts off my accounts!”

I stared at his words through the tinted car window, feeling no anger, no panic, and zero temptation to reply.

For three years, I had apologized for his bad moods, covered for his absences, and attended charity galas with a painted smile.

Vincent had mistaken my patience for weakness, assuming that an aristocratic wife would always trade her dignity for luxury.

He was about to discover that once a quiet woman decides she is done, there is no threat on earth that can make her bend.
