Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

Brooke stood up abruptly, tucking her designer handbag beneath her arm. ""You know what? I don't have to sit here and be insulted by a glorified forklift driver. Come on, Tessa. Let's go. Marcus has clearly lost his mind. He’s probably inhaling chemical fumes at that train yard.""

""Sit down, Brooke,"" I said, my voice cutting through the air like a butcher knife.

""Excuse me? You don't tell me what to—""

""I said sit down,"" I stepped between her and the front door, towering over her. ""Or the very next phone call I make tonight won't be to your auto lender. It will be to the Kansas City Police Department’s financial crimes division.""

Brooke’s mouth fell open. She slowly sank back onto the edge of the coffee table, her knuckles whitening around the strap of her bag.

""You think you’re so smart, don't you?"" I pulled up the screenshots Hannah had forwarded to me and held the screen right in front of my mother's face. ""The Bank of Marcus. That’s what you named the group chat, wasn't it? 'Just tell him Hannah’s vitamins cost double.' 'He’s such an idiot, he doesn't even check the itemized bills.' Did you really think I wouldn't find out? Did you think I was too stupid, too exhausted, too beaten down by sixty-hour workweeks to ever look at where my money was going?""

Darlene looked away from the screen, her lips pressed into a thin, venomous line. ""That was just a joke between sisters. They were venting. You act like you’re our father, always checking receipts, always making us feel guilty for needing a little extra help!""

""A little extra help?"" I barked a bitter laugh. ""There is forty-five thousand dollars sitting in an account that was supposed to be reserved for emergency medical care. Forty-five thousand dollars! Hannah and I have been putting off buying a reliable family car because I thought we were one medical emergency away from bankruptcy. Hannah has been buying second-hand maternity clothes off Facebook Marketplace! She was crying in the kitchen tonight because she felt guilty asking me for fifty dollars to buy a baby monitor!""

Tears of pure fury burned behind my eyelids, but I refused to let them fall in front of these parasites. ""Every hour of overtime I worked. Every Saturday I spent in forty-degree weather hauling steel pallets. Every meal I skipped while you three were booking trips to Scottsdale on my dime. You didn't just steal my money, Mom. You stole time with my wife. You stole my peace of mind. You stole the safety net of my unborn son.""

""Marcus, please,"" Erin spoke up from the corner for the first time, her voice trembling. Unlike Brooke and Tessa, Erin was younger, and the guilt seemed to hit her immediately. ""Mom told us it was her personal savings. She told us you gave her that money as a gift for raising you! She said it was yours and hers together!""

""Shut up, Erin!"" my mother hissed, turning on her youngest daughter with bared teeth. ""Don't you dare apologize to him! He owes me that money! A son owes his mother! Who put food on your plate when you were growing up, Marcus? Who kept a roof over your head? You owe me every single dime you ever make!""

""I don't owe you a damn thing,"" I said, looking at the woman who gave birth to me and realizing, with absolute clarity, that I felt nothing for her. No warmth. No obligation. No love. Only the cold, heavy weight of an illusion finally shattering. ""I paid my debt to you ten times over. When I was nineteen, I took out student loans to pay off your back taxes so you wouldn't lose your house. When Brooke wrecked her first car, I paid the deductible. When Tessa got kicked out of her dorm, I paid her deposit.""

I took a deep breath, pulling out my phone and opening my primary banking app.

""And tonight,"" I continued, ""the payments stop.""
