Chapter 1 - The Boiling Point in the Kitchen

Hannah spun around so fast that she nearly lost her footing on the slick tile floor. Her swollen feet were pale and puffy, pressed flat against the cold linoleum, and her free hand instantly shot out to brace against the edge of the laminate counter. When she saw it was me standing there in the doorway, the frantic terror in her hazel eyes softened into raw humiliation, followed by a rush of fresh tears that cut tracks through the flour and grease smudged across her flushed cheeks.

""Marcus,"" she whispered, her voice cracking as she quickly dragged the back of a soapy, trembling wrist across her face to hide the crying. ""You’re home early. I’m almost done, I swear. I just... I had to clean the roasting pans first because your mother said they’d rust if they sat overnight.""

My jaw clenched so hard that my molars ground together, sending a sharp, electric ache down through my neck. I stepped across the kitchen threshold, my heavy work boots squeaking against the dirty floor, and reached down into the scalding, dirty water. I grabbed her wrists gently and pulled both of her hands out of the sink. Her fingers were pruned, bright red from the heat, and shaking violently. When I looked into the basin, I saw three heavy cast-iron skillets, four ceramic casserole dishes, and half a dozen mixing bowls—dishes from a massive Sunday dinner they had demanded she cook before they settled in to order pizza on my credit card.

""Step away from the sink, Hannah,"" I said, my voice dangerously quiet, vibrating with a level of rage I hadn't felt in years.

""Marcus, please, don't cause a scene,"" she pleaded beneath her breath, her eyes darting nervously toward the kitchen entryway as if expecting my mother to round the corner with a whip. ""Your back is killing you. You’ve been working for fourteen hours. You need to sit down and eat something.""

""I am not sitting down, and you are not washing another damn spoon,"" I said, grabbing a clean dish towel from the rack and wrapping it carefully around her dripping hands. I pulled her against my chest. Her entire body was trembling against mine, her heavy belly pressed firmly into my belt buckle. I could feel Noah shifting erratically inside her, his tiny movements sharp and restless, reacting to his mother's racing pulse. ""Why are they here, Hannah? Why are there four grown women sitting in our living room watching television while you’re bent double over a sink?""

Hannah broke completely then, burying her damp face into the collar of my sweat-stained work shirt. Her chest hitched with heavy, muffled sobs. ""They came over at noon,"" she choked out, whispering as quietly as she could. ""Your mother said Brooke needed a quiet place to study, but then Tessa and Erin showed up with groceries they bought with your emergency store card. They told me that if I was really going to be a stay-at-home mother, I needed to learn how to host family properly. They had me bake two casseroles, bake cookies, and then Tessa spilled an entire two-liter bottle of soda across the carpet and told me to get on my hands and knees to blot it out before it ruined your security deposit.""

A roaring sound filled my ears, like a freight train barreling down the tracks right through our hallway. Every ounce of fatigue from my fourteen-hour warehouse shift vanished, replaced by pure, unadulterated adrenaline. For months, I had excused their laziness as family quirks. I had told myself that helping my mother with her prescriptions and paying my sisters' phone bills was just what an eldest son was supposed to do. I had worked sixty to seventy hours a week, sweating in a Kansas City distribution center until my boots filled with sweat, believing I was being a good son and a provider.

""Did you get on your knees?"" I asked, my voice dropping an octave, dead and cold.

Hannah looked down at the floor, unable to meet my gaze. ""My pelvis hurts so bad, Marcus. The doctor told me last week that Noah is dropping low and that I have symphysis pubis dysfunction. I told your mom I wasn't supposed to be bending or lifting. She... she laughed at me. She told me that young women today are soft, and that if I didn't clean it up, she would tell you that I was neglecting the house while you were out breaking your back.""

She reached into the pocket of her oversized sweatpants and pulled out her cracked smartphone with shaking hands. ""That wasn't even the worst part, Marcus. An hour ago, Brooke left her phone on the kitchen island while she went to the bathroom. A group text popped up on the lock screen. It was between your mother, Brooke, Tessa, and Erin. I didn't mean to snoop, I swear I didn't, but my name was right there in all caps. And then I saw the bank statements they were sharing.""

Hannah unlocked her phone, tapped the screen twice, and turned it toward me. ""Look at what they’ve been doing with your money, Marcus. Look at what they've been doing behind your back for the last three years.""
