Chapter 7 - Voices of the Brave

News of the six-year-old’s harrowing 911 call and Derek Reynolds’ dramatic capture at Blackwood Ridge spread across the county like wildfire. By the following afternoon, local news outlets and community social media pages were flooded with updates. What could have been another quiet tragedy in an overlooked town had transformed into an outpouring of collective solidarity.

At the county courthouse, the arraignment took place behind closed doors due to the age of the victim and the severity of the charges. Derek Reynolds appeared before the magistrate via video link from the county jail, wearing an orange jumpsuit. His previous smugness was entirely gone; he looked disheveled, haggard, and visibly terrified of the inmates housed in the adjacent holding cells.

Prosecutor Daniel Torres read the indictment into the record with a cold, piercing cadence: aggravated child abuse in the first degree, false imprisonment, evidence tampering, and attempted child endangerment resulting in catastrophic bodily injury. Bail was denied without hesitation. The judge remanded Reynolds to maximum-security custody pending trial, ensuring he would never set foot in Silverwood as a free man again.

Meanwhile, back at the hospital, Mia was recovering from her successful orthopedic stabilization procedure. The temporary pins had been placed with surgical precision, relieving the excruciating pressure on her sciatic nerves. For the first time in nearly forty-eight hours, the little girl was resting without crying from movement.

A quiet knock sounded on the wooden frame of Mia’s hospital door. Sarah looked up to see Paramedic Erin Clarke, accompanied by Noah Blake and a woman Sarah didn’t recognize—a woman with kind, tired eyes carrying a giant plush golden retriever bear with a shiny red ribbon around its neck.

""Mrs. Jenkins? Mia?"" Erin asked softly, stepping into the room. ""We brought someone who wanted very much to meet you.""

Sarah recognized the voice immediately from the audio transcripts the police had shared. ""Helen?""

Helen Ward smiled warmly, stepping toward the bedside. ""Hello, Mia. My name is Helen. We talked on the phone yesterday morning.""

Mia’s eyes widened. She reached out one small, cautious hand from beneath the white bedsheet and touched the soft fur of the plush dog. ""You're the lady who stayed with me? Who told me the sirens were coming?""

""I am, sweetheart,"" Helen said, her voice catching with emotion as she gently took Mia’s tiny hand in hers. ""And I have to tell you something very important. In my twenty-two years of answering 911 calls, you are the bravest girl I have ever spoken to. You saved your own life, Mia. You showed more courage yesterday than most grown-ups show in an entire lifetime.""

Mia looked from Helen to Noah, then to Erin, and finally up at her mother. The shadow of terror that had haunted her small face for months seemed to lift, replaced by a shy, radiant smile. ""Does this mean I don't have to be scared anymore?""

""Never again, baby,"" Sarah promised, wrapping her arms gently around her daughter, surrounded by the three first responders who had answered the call that changed everything. ""Never again.""
