Chapter 5 - Fire in the Forest

The estate’s emergency sirens didn't wail; instead, muted amber lights flickered along the baseboards, signaling a silent tactical lockdown. Steel shutters descended over the floor-to-ceiling windows with heavy mechanical thuds, transforming the luxurious sanctuary into an impenetrable bunker.

“Matteo, take Amelia down to the vault,” Lucian commanded, strapping a tactical holster beneath his jacket.

“No,” I gasped, throwing the covers aside and swinging my legs over the edge of the bed. My limbs were weak, but adrenaline surged through my veins like liquid fire. “Lucian, you can’t fight them for me! Sterling has private military contractors! If people die because of me—”

Lucian was beside me before I could finish the sentence. He dropped to one knee in front of me, taking both of my trembling hands into his calloused palms.

“Listen to me very carefully, Amelia,” he said, his gaze unwavering, fierce enough to banish every fear in my heart. “Sterling isn't coming for you because you’re a victim. He is coming because you are the living proof of his destruction. This isn't just about your survival anymore. He brought a war to my home, and in my house, nobody threatens what belongs under my protection.”

The word belongs hung in the air, heavy and intimate, making my breath hitch in my throat.

“Go with Matteo,” Lucian added, his thumb brushing over my knuckles. “Trust me.”

I didn't want to let go of his hands. For three years, I had been an invisible ghost drifting toward an inevitable grave. Now, for the first time, a man was willing to tear the world apart just to keep my heart beating.

“Come back to this room,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion. “Promise me you’ll come back.”

Lucian’s lips curved into a dark, confident smile. “I don't break promises, little bird.”

Matteo guided me quickly through a hidden passage behind the library, descending into a reinforced underground safe room equipped with medical supplies and surveillance monitors. Dr. Vance was already there, calmly setting up an emergency monitoring station.

On the glowing monitors, I watched the brutal choreography of a war unfold.

Sterling’s men had breached the outer iron gates using an armored ram, spilling into the pine forests that surrounded the estate. There were dozens of them—mercenaries clad in tactical body armor, armed with automatic rifles, moving in coordinated fire teams.

But they had walked directly into the lion’s den.

Lucian’s syndicate didn't fight like disorganized street thugs; they operated with the ruthless precision of a seasoned private army. From hidden sniper perches in the high stone ramparts, precision rifle shots cracked through the night mist, dropping the lead mercenaries before they could cross the open lawn.

Then, I saw Lucian on the central monitor.

He moved through the garden shadows like a wraith, completely unfazed by the muzzle flashes illuminating the treeline. Every movement was lethal, efficient, and merciless. When two armed contractors ambushed him near the marble fountain, Lucian stepped inside their firing line with blinding speed, disarming the first with a bone-crushing blow and using the second as a human shield against incoming suppression fire.

He didn't just fight to survive; he fought with an absolute, terrifying dominance that shattered the mercenaries' morale. Within twenty minutes, the gunfire outside slowed to scattered, frantic bursts, replaced by the screams of retreating men realizing they had cornered a devil instead of a businessman.

Suddenly, the safe room’s ceiling trembled violently.

Dust rained down from the concrete beams. The surveillance screens flickered, two cameras cutting to static.

“What was that?” I asked, panic seizing my throat as I gripped the edge of the metal table.

Matteo drew his firearm, his face grim as he tapped his ear communicator. “Breach! A secondary strike team bypassed the main driveway through the drainage tunnel beneath the wine cellar! They’re inside the basement level!”

Before Matteo could finish his report, the heavy blast door of the safe room shuddered under the impact of a high-grade breaching charge.

The metal groaned, the locks warping under immense pressure.

Sterling’s strike team wasn't trying to capture Lucian. They had used the main assault as a bloody distraction—and now, their primary kill squad was right outside the door, tasked with executing the dying girl who held the key to Marcus Sterling’s ruin.
