Chapter 10 - The Eighth Sunrise

The dawn of the seventh day arrived without fanfare, breaking over the eastern hills in a magnificent tapestry of rose, gold, and vibrant amber.

I woke up inside the master bedroom, not to the sterile smell of antiseptic or the cold terror of impending mortality, but to the warmth of strong, protective arms wrapped securely around my waist. Lucian was asleep beside me, his sharp features softened by profound peace, his dark hair messy against the white pillows.

For a long time, I simply lay there, listening to the steady, rhythmic thump of his heart beneath my palm.

I had survived.

The seven days were gone, buried beneath the unstoppable tide of a new beginning. The poison was out of my veins, the monsters who had preyed on the helpless were behind federal bars, and the cold isolation that had once defined my existence had been replaced by a love so fierce and enduring it had conquered death itself.

As the morning sunlight touched the edge of the bed, Lucian’s dark eyes slowly opened. When his gaze found mine, a warm, genuine smile touched his lips—a smile that the ruthless streets of New York would never believe existed.

“Good morning, little bird,” he murmured, his voice husky with sleep, pulling me closer until my forehead rested against his chin.

“Good morning,” I whispered back, kissing the soft hollow of his throat. “I believe Dr. Hayes was mistaken.”

Lucian let out a low, rich chuckle that rumbled through his chest. “Dr. Hayes was an idiot. And today is Day Eight.”

Day Eight. A day that was never supposed to exist.

Later that afternoon, we held a private celebration in the grand gardens overlooking the lake. The estate’s security was relaxed, the heavy steel shutters permanently retracted to let the golden autumn light flood every corner of the home.

Matteo and Dr. Vance joined us on the terrace, raising crystal glasses filled with vintage champagne. Dr. Vance presented me with my final comprehensive medical certificate: completely clean, cellular markers fully stabilized, and a life expectancy that extended well into old age.

“To Day Eight,” Matteo toasted with a broad, genuine grin, clinking his glass against mine. “And to the only woman brave enough to boss the Don around in his own house.”

Lucian raised his glass, shaking his head with fond amusement while wrapping an arm around my waist, pulling me firmly against his side. “Watch yourself, Matteo. She’s officially running the estate now.”

We laughed, the sound echoing across the serene waters of the lake, clean and free of the shadows that had once haunted us.

Before the sun dipped below the mountains, Lucian led me by the hand to the edge of the stone terrace. Sitting on an iron display easel was my finished painting, beautifully framed in polished dark walnut.

In the lower right-hand corner, beneath the brilliant waves crashing under a vibrant sunset sky, two sets of initials were painted in delicate gold leaf: A.C. and L.M.

Lucian reached into his pocket and drew out a small velvet box. When he clicked it open, a breathtaking emerald-cut diamond ring caught the dying rays of the sun, flashing with brilliant, unyielding fire.

“I spent twenty years building an empire, Amelia,” Lucian spoke, his voice steady, deep, and filled with a raw sincerity that brought tears of pure happiness to my eyes. “I thought power was the only thing that could keep a man safe in this cruel world. But these past seven days showed me that an empire is completely worthless if you don't have someone worth fighting for to share it with.”

He took the ring from the box and held it between his fingers, looking directly into my soul.

“Will you stay with me, Amelia? Not as my debt, not as someone under my protection, but as my equal, my partner, and the love of my life?”

I didn't hesitate for a single second.

“Yes,” I whispered, throwing my arms around his neck as tears of joy spilled over my cheeks. “A thousand times, yes.”

Lucian slipped the ring onto my finger, its weight cool and perfect against my skin, before lifting me off my feet and pressing his lips to mine in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our past, our present, and our eternal future.

Seven days earlier, I had sent a desperate, hopeless message into the dark, believing my life was ending on a forgotten, rainy afternoon.

I hadn't known then that my confession would cross paths with destiny. That a ruthless king of the underworld would become my savior, that his fortress would become my home, and that the darkest week of my life would lead me directly into the brightest sunrise I would ever know.
