Chapter 16 - The Raid

At 6:12 the next morning, thirty federal agents entered Halcyon Tower.
By 6:14, every major television network in Chicago had cameras outside.
By 6:20, my engagement to Lucian Moretti became national news.
I stood barefoot in the penthouse kitchen watching agents photograph filing cabinets while an attorney named Rebecca Shaw argued about warrant limitations.
Lucian sat calmly at the dining table in a charcoal sweater.
He looked almost bored.
I knew better.
“Mr. Moretti,” the lead agent said, “we need access to your encrypted office server.”
“You have access to the materials specified in your warrant.”
“We believe additional accounts—”
“My counsel will answer.”
The agent glanced at me.
“Ms. Delaney, we'll need your laptop.”
Lucian stood.
“No.”
“Lucian,” Rebecca warned.
The agent raised an eyebrow.
“Her company conducted twelve million dollars in work for you.”
“And every invoice is documented.”
I walked to my office.
“I'll get it.”
Lucian followed.
The moment we were alone, he shut the door.
“You're leaving.”
“No.”
“Harper.”
“No.”
His face hardened.
“This is not Bellini House. This is federal prosecution.”
“I know.”
“They will dissect your life.”
“They'll discover I once deducted a drafting table incorrectly and bought too much wine after my fiancé cheated on me.”
“This isn't funny.”
“I know.”
His anger broke.
Fear replaced it.
“If Mason manufactured evidence against my companies, he can manufacture evidence against you.”
“Then we prove it.”
“I won't let you lose your career because of me.”
I stared at him.
There it was again.
The fortress.
The instinct to decide that protecting me meant removing me.
“Do you remember what you said when you proposed?”
His jaw tightened.
“Harper.”
“You said I was your home.”
“You are.”
“Then stop trying to evacuate me every time the weather gets bad.”
His eyes closed briefly.
I stepped closer.
“I am not here because I don't understand who you are. I know your past isn't clean. I know you inherited things most people would run from. But I also watched you destroy Romano without firing a bullet. I watched you hand evidence to federal prosecutors. I watched you spend years turning violent businesses into legitimate ones.”
He looked at me.
“If there are crimes you committed, tell me now.”
Silence.
Then Lucian nodded.
“When I was twenty, I ordered men beaten.”
I swallowed.
“I moved money illegally across borders. I paid corrupt officials overseas. I threatened people. I protected men who later went to prison.”
He didn't soften it.
Didn't excuse it.
“Did you murder anyone?”
“No.”
“Order anyone murdered?”
His eyes held mine.
“No.”
I believed him.
Not because I was naïve.
Because Lucian never lied when the truth made him look worse.
“Then we fight what is true and expose what isn't.”
He touched my cheek.
“What did I do to deserve you?”
“Accidentally receive an obscene text message.”
A laugh escaped him despite everything.
A knock interrupted us.
Gideon entered.
“Kyle Bradley is downstairs.”
My entire body stiffened.
“What?”
“He says he has information about Vantage Capital and Mason Hale.”
Lucian's expression turned glacial.
“No.”
“Lucian.”
“No.”
Gideon looked between us.
“He came voluntarily. No attorney. Carrying an external hard drive.”
I remembered Kyle begging me for blueprints.
Kyle tied to a pillar.
Kyle's career destroyed.
“Bring him up.”
Lucian stared at me.
“Harper.”
“If Mason used Vantage, Kyle may know something.”
“And if he's part of this?”
“Then Gideon can throw him out the window.”
Gideon blinked.
I looked at him.
“Metaphorically.”
“Of course.”
Ten minutes later, Kyle Bradley entered the penthouse wearing a cheap navy suit.
For the first time since I'd known him, he didn't look polished.
He looked humbled.
He stopped when he saw my ring.
Something crossed his face.
Pain, maybe.
Then it disappeared.
“Congratulations.”
“Why are you here?”
Kyle held up the drive.
“Because I found the reason Romano knew about Lucian's security.”
Lucian leaned against the counter.
“You have thirty seconds.”
Kyle swallowed.
“Vantage wasn't just managing Romano's debt.”
He placed the hard drive on the table.
“They were laundering Moretti money too.”
Lucian became still.
“Impossible.”
Kyle shook his head.
“Not your money.”
May you like
He looked toward the television, where Mason Hale's photograph was now appearing beside the scandal.
“Money Mason Hale stole from you.”
