Chapter 8 - The Price Of Cowardice

The suite remained tomb-silent for several minutes after the door clicked shut behind Rebecca. The grandfather clock in the corner ticked with deafening resonance. I stood frozen in the center of the lavish living room, staring at the empty space where the woman I had once loved had stood with such absolute moral authority.
""You idiot,"" Victoria whispered, her voice shaking violently as she leaned against the bar, clutching an unopened bottle of wine. She turned around, her eyes hollow, terrified, and venomous. ""You forged an IP assignment fourteen years ago? Are you insane?""
""I was twenty-six, Victoria!"" I shouted, tears streaming down my face. ""I had nothing! Your father told me point-blank that he wouldn't let his daughter marry a penniless dreamer with baggage! He demanded that I bring proprietary technology to the table! I did it for you! I did it for the empire you demanded!""
""Don't you dare put this on me!"" Victoria screeched. ""My father gave you a platform! You were supposed to be our golden boy, and instead, you're an incompetent thief who built our family’s empire on stolen sand! If this goes to court, my father's PR machine will paint you as the sole architect of this fraud. You will take the fall alone, Nathaniel. The Sterling family will claim we were innocent victims of your deceit!""
I looked at the woman I had spent thirteen years trying to appease. I had bought her yachts, financed her lavish charity galas, and raised her entitled daughter, while ignoring the hollow ache in my own chest. In an instant of startling clarity, the veil of vanity dissolved. Victoria had never loved me. She had loved the trophy of an ambitious, obedient CEO who expanded her family’s prestige.
""I won't let you frame me, Victoria,"" I said quietly, a strange, unprecedented calm settling over my chaotic soul.
""You don't have a choice!"" she yelled, laughing hysterically. ""What are you going to do? Confess? Ruin your own life?""
""My life was ruined the day I walked out on Rebecca,"" I replied, pulling my phone from my breast pocket.
Without another word to Victoria, ignoring her shrieks and Madison’s terrified sobbing from the adjacent bedroom, I walked out of the penthouse suite. I took the elevator down to the lobby and stepped out into the crisp, cold Philadelphia midnight air.
I stood on the sidewalk beneath the glowing streetlamps, looking at the city skyline. For thirteen years, I had run from the shadows of my past, climbing an endless ladder of shallow prestige. I pulled up my contacts, found the number for Marcus Thorne’s legal offices listed on the digital competition program, and hit dial.

""Hello?"" a gruff, dignified voice answered after three rings.
""Judge Thorne,"" I said, my voice steadying with every breath. ""My name is Nathaniel Brooks. I am the CEO of Brookfield Technologies. I am calling to surrender all corporate records, waive my attorney-client privilege, and provide full testimony regarding the intellectual property theft from Rebecca Bennett.""
