Chapter 2 - What She Had Learned to Hide

At St. Arden, the emergency physician cut away the bloodied dressing while Lucian stood behind a curtain with Rebecca’s purse in his hands.

He had carried her handbag before.

At airports. Outside restaurants. Once, laughing, while she searched for an earring beneath their bed.

Tonight it felt like evidence of how little he knew about her days.

Inside were discharge instructions, an appointment card, a prescription bottle, and a folded receipt for a hired car.

She had gone to the hospital alone.

She had come home alone.

He remembered finding her asleep in the guest bedroom the previous afternoon.

He had kissed her forehead and assumed she was tired.

A nurse emerged.

“She’s stable. The bleeding appears to be from one of the collection sites. The team is assessing her blood count and whether she needs further treatment.”

“Can I see her?”

“She asked for a few minutes.”

Lucian nodded.

He sat.

Across the waiting area, a vending machine hummed beside a plastic plant.

For three days he had imagined every possible way to lose his brother.

It had not occurred to him that his wife might be quietly disappearing while he watched someone else’s hospital door.

His phone vibrated.

MOTHER.

He silenced it.

Then Malcolm called.

Then his executive assistant.

Finally, a message arrived from Celeste.

Please remember how emotional Rebecca becomes. We should handle this privately before she damages Elliot’s recovery.

Lucian read it twice.

He did not answer.

When Rebecca allowed him into the treatment room, fresh blankets covered her legs. An intravenous line ran into her hand.

Dr. Mira Shah stood beside the bed.

“With Rebecca’s permission,” she said, “I can explain the donation and recovery instructions.”

Rebecca nodded.

Dr. Shah described the collection procedure, the expected soreness and fatigue, and the signs that required urgent attention.

“The transplant is an important step,” she added. “It does not mean Elliot is out of danger. His recovery will take time.”

Lucian looked at Rebecca.

“You knew all this?”

“Yes.”

“And you still did it.”

“I wanted to help him.”

There was no grandeur in her answer.

That made it harder to bear.

After the doctor left, he pulled a chair close.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Rebecca watched the clear fluid moving through the tubing.

“Because I didn’t want my body discussed at a family meeting.”

“I would never have allowed that.”

“You allowed them to discuss everything else.”

He went silent.

She swallowed.

“My job. My clothes. My parents. Whether I was grateful enough for our apartment. Whether I should stop working because it embarrassed your mother that I still needed a salary.”

“You don’t need—”

“I know.”

Her eyes lifted.

“That was never why I worked.”

Lucian leaned forward, elbows on his knees.

“Tell me what I missed.”

Rebecca laughed once, without amusement.

“You keep saying missed as though I hid behind a door.”

He deserved that.

He waited.

She told him about the holiday seating arrangements. The invitations addressed only to him. The afternoon Celeste had introduced her as someone Lucian was helping.

She told him about the texts.

And about the night she had asked him not to leave her alone at his mother’s birthday dinner.

He remembered.

He had said, Just get through tonight. She’s under pressure.

Rebecca looked exhausted.

“You kept asking me to get through things.”

Lucian covered his mouth with one hand.

There were apologies large enough to become another demand.

He would not ask her to carry his remorse too.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “You told me. I made it easier for myself not to listen.”

A tear slid toward her hairline.

She wiped it away impatiently.

“I don’t know what happens to us now.”

His chest tightened.

But he nodded.

“You don’t have to decide tonight.”

For the first time since entering the ballroom, Rebecca’s shoulders lowered slightly.

Then her phone lit up on the bedside table.

Celeste had sent a message.

If you loved this family, you would never have embarrassed us like this.

May you like

Rebecca handed Lucian the phone.

This time, she did not explain it away.
