Chapter 6 - The Fall Of The House Of Mercer

Within forty-eight hours, the story of Mercer Global’s collapse became the lead headline on every major financial network.

Bloomberg ran an exclusive segment detailing the hidden corporate architecture of Vale-St. Claire International.

The Wall Street Journal published front-page photos of federal investigators carrying boxes of financial records out of the Mercer Global corporate headquarters on Lexington Avenue.

Grant spent those two days sleeping on a stained pull-out sofa in Dean’s cramped studio apartment in Astoria, eating cold takeout and watching his name get dragged through the public mud.

Every corporate contact had blocked his number.

Old fraternity brothers, private club members, and political allies refused to take his calls.

At 10:00 AM on Friday morning, Grant walked into the Manhattan District Attorney's office accompanied by a junior public defender he had met at legal aid.

The conference room was cold, smelling of stale coffee and industrial carpet.

Across the table sat Assistant District Attorney Rachel Price, flanked by two forensic accountants and Arthur Sterling.

"Mr. Mercer," ADA Price began, sliding a thick manila folder across the oak table. "We have reviewed the evidence submitted by Ms. Vale's legal team regarding your private expenditures over the last thirty-six months."

Grant swallowed hard, his throat dry.

"Those were legitimate executive entertainment expenses approved by the board."

Arthur Sterling smiled faintly, opening the top document.

"The board never saw these invoices, Grant," Arthur said. "You funneled four point two million dollars through five shell corporations registered in Delaware to purchase jewelry, luxury real estate leases, and offshore yacht charters for Ms. Vanessa Cole."

"That's a civil dispute!" Grant stammered, looking desperately at his public defender. "It's a marital asset dispute!"

"It became criminal grand larceny the moment you used employee pension guarantee funds as collateral for your personal offshore loans," ADA Price countered sharply.

Grant’s heart felt like it had stopped beating entirely.

"What?"

"Ms. Vale discovered the shortfall during an internal audit three weeks ago," Arthur explained calmly. "She quietly covered the forty-million-dollar pension deficit from her private accounts so three thousand factory workers wouldn't lose their retirement savings."

Grant slumped into his vinyl chair, the room spinning around him.

"She covered it?" he whispered.

"She protected the innocent people you were willing to bankrupt to buy diamond bracelets for your mistress," ADA Price said, her voice dripping with disgust.

"Now you have a choice, Mr. Mercer. You can sign this immediate surrender of all counterclaims, relinquish every claim to marital property, and agree to five years of supervised financial probation..."

ADA Price paused, leaning forward to lock eyes with him.

"...Or I will present this twenty-two-count felony indictment to the grand jury by two o'clock this afternoon. And you will spend the next fifteen years in federal prison."

Grant looked down at the pen resting on the table.

His hand shook so violently he could barely hold the barrel.

With tears dripping onto the legal parchment, he signed his name on the dotted line, stripping away the last illusion of his stolen empire.
