Chapter 2 - The Shadows In The Penthouse

Ten minutes after Eleanor stepped out, the atmosphere in the forty-second-floor penthouse curdled into uneasy tension.
Grant poured another generous measure of scotch, downing half of it in one burn.
"Crazy woman," he muttered, pacing before the floor-to-ceiling glass that overlooked the sparkling river below. "She thinks she can intimidate me with vague phone calls."
Vanessa leaned forward in Eleanor’s chair, swirling the expensive vintage red wine.
"Grant, maybe you shouldn't have hit her," Vanessa murmured, tapping her manicured nails against the crystal stem. "If she goes to the police, the bad press could delay our merger with the Vanguard Group."
"The press won't touch this," Grant scoffed, waving his hand dismissively. "Eleanor hates publicity. She spent fifteen years hiding behind charitable galas and antique shopping. She has no spine."
Judith picked nervously at her manicured cuticles.
"Grant, dear... what did she mean by 'the Sovereign Protocol'? That sounded very specific."
"It's corporate babble she probably overheard me say during a conference call," Grant sneered, sitting at the foot of the table. "Eat your dinner. Let's celebrate our new VP of Strategic Partnerships properly."
Dean raised his glass with an uncertain laugh.
"To the real boss of Mercer Global," Dean toasted, nodding toward Vanessa.
Suddenly, the overhead chandelier flickered twice.
Down the hallway, the low chime of the smart-home terminal sounded three rapid beeps.
Grant frowned, pulling his phone from his suit pocket.
A notification banner flashed across the screen in bright crimson: Access Revoked by Master Administrator.
"What the hell?" Grant muttered, tapping the glass repeatedly.
"What is it, Grant?" Vanessa asked, setting her glass down on the walnut table.
"The building management system just locked me out of the climate controls and the private elevator bank," he said, scrolling frantically.
Before anyone could reply, Caroline’s phone buzzed violently on the tablecloth.
She picked it up with shaking hands, reading the email notification that had just landed in her corporate inbox.
Her face drained of all color, turning as white as her linen napkin.
"Grant..." Caroline stammered, her voice trembling. "My corporate access credentials were just terminated."
"What are you talking about?" Grant snapped.
"My Mercer Global email, my building badge, my expense account... all canceled by HR at 7:18 PM," Caroline whispered, tears welling in her eyes. "The notification says: 'Terminated for Breach of Loyalty and Corporate Espionage per Executive Order 01.'"
"That's impossible!" Grant roared, slamming his glass down so hard the amber liquid sloshed onto the wood. "I am the Chief Executive Officer! No one fires my staff without my signature!"
His personal phone began ringing.
The screen read: Chief Financial Officer – Robert Chen.
Grant snatched the phone and jabbed the speaker button.
"Chen! What the hell is going on with our internal servers?"
"Grant, thank God you picked up," Chen cried, panic bleeding through the speaker. "The Department of Justice and the SEC just served us with simultaneous freezing orders! Every corporate credit line has been suspended!"
"On whose authority?" Grant shouted, his voice cracking with sudden panic.
"The majority shareholder," Chen gasped. "The parent entity that holds ninety-two percent of Mercer Global’s voting shares just called in our three-hundred-million-dollar collateral loan!"
Grant felt his stomach drop out from under him.

"What parent entity? Mercer Global has been privately owned by my family since day one!"
"No, Grant, it isn't," Chen said, his voice dropping into horrified awe. "We are a subsidiary of Vale-St. Claire International. And the sole owner of Vale-St. Claire just ordered an emergency liquidation."
