Chapter 8 - The Settlement Ambush

The courtroom conference room was cold and smelled of old leather and floor wax.
Landon sat on the far side of the long mahogany table, wearing an ill-fitting gray suit, dark circles carved deeply beneath his sunken eyes.
His attorney, Richard Sterling, was a flashy litigator known for bluster rather than meticulous preparation.
When Evelyn and I walked in, Landon didn't look me in the eye; he stared down at his yellow legal pad, chewing nervously on the cap of a pen.
"We are here to resolve this matter amicably without dragging this family through a painful public trial," Sterling announced grandly, adjusting his silk tie.
"My client has made an extraordinarily generous preliminary offer. He is willing to surrender the primary residence entirely to Mrs. Hayes, along with substantial spousal support."
Judge Callahan, an experienced family court jurist with a no-nonsense demeanor, adjusted her spectacles and looked over her bench.
"Mrs. Cross, has your client reviewed Mr. Hayes's proposal?" Judge Callahan asked.
"We have, Your Honor," Evelyn said, standing up smoothly. "And we reject it unequivocally."
Landon scoffed, shaking his head with theatrical exasperation.
"Harper, you're being completely unreasonable!" Landon burst out, ignoring his lawyer's warning hand.
"I offered you the entire house! What more do you want from me? You want blood?!"
"I want equity, Landon," I said, speaking for myself across the table.
My voice was quiet, poised, and utterly devoid of fear.
"And equity requires full financial transparency under Colorado law."
"We provided full financial disclosures!" Sterling interjected defensively, waving a stack of tax returns. "Every bank account, 401(k), and asset has been presented!"
"Not quite, Mr. Sterling," Evelyn said, pulling six bound copies of our forensic report from her leather briefcase.
She handed one to the clerk for the judge and slid two copies across the table to Landon and his attorney.
"We would like to introduce the complete asset portfolio of Red Peak Ventures LLC, registered in the state of Delaware."
Landon’s hand froze on his legal pad, his eyes darting to the bold black heading on the cover page.
"What... what is this?" Sterling stammered, frantically flipping through the bank records and corporate filings.
"That," Evelyn said with deadly calm, "is one point four million dollars of concealed marital property hidden by Mr. Hayes over the past forty-eight months."
Judge Callahan looked down from the bench, her expression hardening into absolute granite.
"Mr. Sterling," the judge said, her voice dropping into a dangerous register. "Did your client certify under oath that his preliminary disclosure was complete and truthful?"
Sterling turned to look at Landon, his face turning an ash-gray color as he realized his client had committed felony perjury in front of a senior judge.

Landon slumped back into his leather chair, the pen slipping from his numb fingers and rolling off the table onto the floor.
The silence in the courtroom was absolute.
