Chapter 4 - The Truth in the Ashes

“I let you?”

The two words left my mouth like twin daggers, sharp, cold, and coated in eight years of accumulated venom.

I pulled my hands completely off the table, tucking them into my coat pockets, refusing to let his trembling fingers touch a single millimeter of my skin.

“You think I let you marry Victoria, Dante?” I asked, my voice rising in a dangerous, rhythmic cadence that made him shrink back into the booth. “I spent eight years on my knees begging you to give me a simple civil license! Eight years of listening to you say that your family was too complicated, that your syndicate obligations were too dangerous, that you couldn't be a husband!”

Dante dropped his head into his hands, his broad shoulders shaking violently under his bespoke vest.

“Elena, you don't understand what happened—”

“I understand that I packed my bags, booked an economy flight to Zurich, and threw up in an airport bathroom before I ever cleared customs!” I hissed across the table, tears of remembered humiliation finally burning behind my eyelids. “I found out I was pregnant in an emergency clinic in Bern, with forty-eight hundred dollars in my checking account and not a single friend on the continent!”

Dante lifted his head, his face contorted in horrific, agonizing guilt. “Why didn't you call me? Why didn't you send a single letter?”

“To tell you what?” I demanded, leaning forward until my eyes were burning straight into his hollow soul. “To tell the man who had just kissed my sister in front of three hundred society guests that he had an inconvenient bastard in Switzerland? So Victoria could hire investigators to poison my milk? So your board of directors could force me into an abortion to protect the Moretti stock valuation?”

Dante slammed his fist onto the oak table, rattling the porcelain coffee cups.

“I would have burned this city to the ground before I let anyone touch a hair on your head!” he roared, his voice thick with a ferocious, primal fury that silenced the two patrons sitting near the front counter.

“You didn't burn it for me, Dante,” I said softly, every trace of anger suddenly draining from my voice, leaving behind only the cold, hollow emptiness of the truth. “You burned me for the city.”

Dante closed his eyes, two heavy tears carving clean tracks through the stubble on his cheeks.

He reached into his breast pocket, his fingers shaking so violently that he dropped a small, worn leather notebook onto the table between us.

It was my father’s personal journal—the one that had mysteriously gone missing from our family home two weeks before he died.

“Your father didn't die of a heart attack, Elena,” Dante whispered, his voice dropping into a register that made the blood freeze in my veins.

I stared at the leather book, my breath catching in my throat. “What are you talking about?”

“Four years ago, your father uncovered an embezzlement scheme inside Carter Logistics,” Dante explained, his hands gripping the edge of the booth as if holding onto sanity. “Forty-two million dollars systematically siphoned into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.”

“Victoria managed the financial accounts for Carter Logistics,” I breathed, the pieces falling into place with sickening clarity.

“Victoria didn't just manage them; she stole them,” Dante said, his jaw tightening into iron. “And when your father threatened to take the evidence to the United States Attorney, Victoria went to my father’s syndicate council. She offered them seventy percent of Carter Logistics’ maritime freight lanes if they made your father’s heart condition permanent.”

The café seemed to tilt on its axis. The air became thin, cold, and impossible to breathe.

“My father had a cardiac arrest at his desk,” I choked out, clutching the edge of the table.

“He was administered a synthetic potassium compound that mimics coronary thrombosis,” Dante revealed, his voice shaking with pure, unadulterated self-hatred. “I found out the night before our lakeside trip. I went to the council to kill Victoria myself.”

He lifted his gaze to mine, his gray eyes swimming with an agony so profound that it took my breath away.

“My father gave me an ultimatum, Elena,” Dante choked out. “Marry Victoria to absorb Carter Logistics under the Moretti family umbrella, keeping her under 24-hour syndicate surveillance where she couldn't harm you… or watch her arrange an ‘unfortunate fatal accident’ for my sweet, innocent Elena on the Kennedy Expressway.”
