Chapter 8 - The Price of Blood

I woke to the sterile smell of antiseptic and the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor. The room was softly lit, filled with state-of-the-art medical equipment and armed guards standing silently outside the thick frosted glass doors. I bolted upright in the hospital bed, my hand instantly flying to my stomach.

"Easy, Mrs. Moretti. Breathe. The baby is safe." A gentle female doctor stood beside the bed, adjusting an IV drip. "You experienced acute stress-induced contractions, but we stopped the preterm labor in time. The fetal heart rate is strong. You and your little girl are going to be fine."

"A girl?" I whispered, fresh tears pooling in my eyes.

"A healthy baby girl," the doctor smiled softly before nodding toward the corner of the room and stepping out.

Sitting in a hard plastic chair against the wall was Vincent. He looked like a ghost. His knuckles were bruised, his face hollowed by exhaustion, and his suit covered in dried mud. He hadn't shaved in days. He looked at me with such profound reverence and terror that he barely seemed to breathe.

"I stayed in the corner," he said quietly, his voice cracked with strain. "The doctor said stress is bad for you. If you want me to leave the room, Claire, say the word and I will walk out that door right now."

I looked at him, seeing the profound, irreversible transformation in his demeanor. The arrogance was completely dead. The untouchable mafia don had been stripped down to a desperate father and an agonizingly penitent husband.

"What happened to the Casales?" I asked quietly.

Vincent’s jaw tightened slightly, a momentary flicker of his ruthless nature showing before softening as he looked back at me. "They will never threaten you, our daughter, or anyone else again. I spent the last twelve hours dismantling their entire organization down to the foundations. Chicago belongs entirely to the Moretti name now, but none of it matters to me anymore."

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a thick envelope, setting it gently on the edge of the blanket near my feet. "Those are the deeds to three offshore properties, clean bank accounts with tens of millions in legitimate funds, and signed divorce papers. I signed my part. You get full custody. You get everything. If you walk away, you will be safe and wealthy for the rest of your days, and I will never force myself into your life."
