Chapter 4 - The Clean Break

Ten thousand feet above the Atlantic Ocean, the cabin of the Air France Boeing 777 was bathed in a gentle indigo night-light.
Kira Lawson sat in seat 2A of the first-class cabin, wearing a pair of soft gray cashmere loungewear that Sarah had thoughtfully packed in her carry-on. Her wedding gown was folded safely in an archival garment bag in the overhead compartment, waiting to be dropped off at a vintage consignment charity shop the moment they landed in Europe.
In seat 2B, Sarah was sipping a dry martini, scrolling through a tablet that was connected to the plane's high-speed satellite Wi-Fi.
""The wedding hashtag on Instagram is an absolute war zone,"" Sarah noted without looking up. ""Apparently, Blake had a full-blown meltdown in the lobby around six o'clock. The hotel manager had to call security because he refused to leave the private lounge until they gave him access to the security camera footage to see which taxi you took.""
Kira took a small sip of sparkling water with lime. ""Did he really think I took a yellow cab?""
""He has zero situational awareness,"" Sarah replied. ""Which brings us to our next agenda item. Julian texted. He and David cleared your personal library, your jewelry, your art collection, and your grandmother's dining set out of the Tribeca loft by five p.m. The locks have been re-keyed with smart biometric deadbolts. Blake’s clothes, golf clubs, and his ridiculous espresso machine are currently sitting in three numbered lockers at the Manhattan Mini Storage on Tenth Avenue. Julian left the key codes in an envelope with the building doorman.""
Kira leaned her head back against the plush leather headrest and closed her eyes.
She expected to feel a wave of grief. She expected to feel the crushing weight of heartbreak that was supposed to accompany the sudden, catastrophic destruction of a four-year relationship. She had loved Blake. When they first met at that coffee shop near Madison Square Park, he had been funny, ambitious, and attentive. He had brought her soup when she had the flu. He had sat through her long, boring client presentations and applauded louder than anyone else in the room.
But love, Kira had learned, was not an absolute currency. It didn't mean anything if it was paid out in nickels while another woman was collecting all the gold bars.
Over the last two years, Riley had become a ghost haunting every hallway of their relationship. If Blake and Kira had reservations at a Michelin-star restaurant, Riley would call with an anxiety attack about her boss, and Blake would spend forty minutes of the meal in the restaurant corridor talking her off the ledge. If Kira needed Blake to attend her firm’s annual charity gala, Riley would suddenly need help assembling IKEA furniture or taking her cat to the emergency vet.
And every single time Kira raised the issue, Blake had looked at her with that infuriating, condescending softness and said the same four words:
Kira, she has nobody. You have everything. Kira won’t mind.
""I spent two years being the strong one,"" Kira whispered into the darkened cabin.
Sarah turned her head, her sharp lawyer eyes softening slightly. ""Being strong is exhausting when the person who is supposed to protect you treats your strength as an excuse to neglect you.""
""I don't hate him,"" Kira said, looking out the tiny oval window at the dark expanse of clouds below. ""That’s the strange part. I don't feel angry anymore. I just feel... light. Like I finally dropped a concrete backpack I’ve been hauling up a mountain for forty-eight months.""
""Good,"" Sarah said, tapping her tablet screen. ""Because tomorrow morning at ten o'clock, we have a breakfast meeting at Le Meurice with Antoine Moreau.""
Kira’s eyes opened instantly. ""Moreau? As in Moreau & Associates? The lead firm for the Seine Riverfront Redevelopment Project?""
""The very same,"" Sarah smiled. ""He heard through the industry grapevine two weeks ago that you were considering an international sabbatical. When I confirmed yesterday that your schedule was suddenly wide open, he cleared his entire Monday morning. He wants a senior design director who understands both American high-rise engineering and classic European preservation. The compensation package includes an apartment in the Seventh Arrondissement overlooking the Eiffel Tower.""

A slow, genuine smile spread across Kira’s lips. It was the first real smile she had experienced in months.
""Tell Antoine I’ll be there at nine-forty-five,"" Kira said. ""I never like to be late for a real opportunity.""
