Chapter 9 - The Truth Behind the Ring

Ethan looked up, his face pale and devastated. "Is it Julian? Are you with him now? Tell me the truth, Claire! Is he why you won't give us a chance?"
Claire looked back toward the command trailer, where Julian was quietly speaking with an inspector, occasionally glancing up to ensure she was safe and unbothered.
"Julian never once asked me to compete for his attention," Claire answered honestly. "When I was sick, he brought medicine to my desk without making a speech about how busy he was. When I needed to leave Boston, he didn't offer to save me—he offered me an executive partnership so I could save myself."
She stepped closer to Ethan, kneeling down so she was at eye level with him in the cold snow. Her hand reached out, gently patting his shoulder in a gesture of profound, final pity.
"Julian didn't take me from you, Ethan," she whispered. "You handed me to the world the moment you made me feel invisible. Julian is just the man who looked at the woman you discarded and saw an entire universe."
Ethan let out a broken wail, grabbing the hem of her trench coat like a drowning sailor clutching at driftwood. "I can't live without you, Claire. I swear to God I can't."
"You lived without me for five years while I was sleeping in your bed," Claire said softly, prying his fingers loose with gentle, deliberate strength. "You just enjoyed having someone keep the lights on while you wandered."
She stood up, brushing the stray flakes of snow from her coat. She pulled a small velvet box from her pocket and opened it, revealing the silver promise ring he had left on the dresser months ago.
"I kept this because I wanted to return it to you in person," Claire said, dropping the ring gently into Ethan’s open, trembling palm. "Keep it as a reminder for the next woman you love: never make someone feel alone while they are standing right next to you."
"Claire... please..." Ethan sobbed, his voice cracking against the mountain wind.
"Goodbye, Ethan," Claire said, offering him one final, genuine smile—a smile free of sorrow, free of resentment, and glowing with absolute liberation. "I truly hope you learn to love someone honestly one day."
She turned around and walked back toward the command trailer. Julian met her halfway, wrapping a warm wool blanket around her shoulders and handing her a steaming thermos of spiced cider.

Ethan watched from his knees as Claire laughed at something Julian whispered, leaning into his side naturally as they walked inside together, the heavy steel door closing securely behind them.
Ethan sat alone in the Swiss snow, holding a cheap silver ring that had cost him the only woman who would have loved him until the end of time.
