Chapter 4 - The Golden Parachute Fails

The color drained from Grant’s face so rapidly he appeared physically ill. He grabbed the paper, his hands trembling as he scanned the signatures, the legal seals, and the unmistakable notarized mark of Evelyn’s grandmother’s trust.

“This... this is impossible,” Grant stammered, his eyes darting to Bentley. “Bentley, you reviewed the mezzanine papers! You told me it was passive institutional money!”

Bentley looked down at the table, refusing to speak.

Lila jumped to her feet, her composure cracking. “This is a bluff! You can’t just call a loan due because you’re jealous of a promotion! We have contracts! We have covenants!”

Arthur Sterling turned his gaze upon Lila, his expression completely devoid of warmth. “Miss Warren, you would do well to sit down and remain silent until the federal authorities arrive.”

Lila froze. “Federal... what?”

“Over the weekend, a forensic audit was completed on Mercer Alder’s secondary expense accounts,” Evelyn said, speaking for the first time. Her voice was quiet, melodic, and terrifyingly calm. “It appears that over the last fourteen months, three point four million dollars in corporate funds were routed to a shell company in the Cayman Islands registered under your brother’s name, Miss Warren. Wire transfers authorized exclusively by Grant Mercer under the guise of ‘international logistics consulting.’”

Evelyn took a step toward the table, her gaze locked on Grant.

“You bought her a six-hundred-thousand-dollar villa in Cabo,” Evelyn said. “You leased a private jet for weekend trips to Saint Barthélemy, billing it as client acquisition. And you did it all while telling me that we needed to cut payroll for sixty warehouse workers in Ohio because the company was facing tight cash flow.”

Grant swallowed hard, his throat dry. “Evelyn, listen to me. That was... those were legitimate business expenses. We can explain everything. Let’s talk in private. We’re husband and wife! We built this together!”

“You didn’t build anything, Grant,” Evelyn said. “You were a handsome mannequin in an expensive suit. You gave speeches while I handled the lenders. You took the applause while I smoothed over your catastrophic contractual errors. And Saturday night, when you kicked me like a dog to prove to your mistress that you were the master of this house, you broke the only thing that was keeping you afloat: my patience.”

Grant looked frantically at the other board members. “Harrison! Davis! You're independent directors! You can’t let her do this! Vote on the resolution! We can issue equity to cover the debt call!”

Harrison, an elderly investor who had known Evelyn’s father, slowly pushed his glasses up his nose.

“Grant,” Harrison said with heavy disgust. “We have already reviewed the forensic summary this morning. The board convened in an emergency session at seven-thirty. By unanimous consent of the independent directors, your powers as Chief Executive Officer have been suspended pending a full criminal investigation. You have no authority to issue stock. You have no authority to call a vote. In fact, security is currently clearing your personal effects from your office.”

“You can’t fire me!” Grant shouted, his voice cracking as panic overtook his arrogance. “My name is on the building! Mercer Alder! It’s my name!”

“The building is owned by Sentinel Vance,” Evelyn replied softly. “And by the end of the week, the sign will be taken down.”
