Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Coup

The boardroom on the forty-second floor of the Mercer Alder tower offered a panoramic view of the Chicago skyline, but on Monday morning at nine o’clock, the atmosphere inside was suffocating.

Grant Mercer strode into the room holding a cup of espresso, exuding the casual arrogance of a conqueror. He wore an Italian charcoal suit that had cost twelve thousand dollars, his golden hair styled to effortless perfection. Behind him walked Lila Warren, wearing an emerald dress that practically screamed authority, carrying an embossed leather portfolio.

Around the conference table sat the five outside directors, along with Bentley Shaw, Grant’s longtime college friend and vice president of acquisitions. None of them looked happy. The silence in the room was brittle.

“Morning, gentlemen,” Grant said, taking his place at the head of the polished walnut table without looking at anyone directly. “I know it’s early after the gala, but we have big things to finalize. Today, we formally certify Lila’s appointment as COO and ratify the stock grant. Let's make this quick; I have a tee time at the simulator at eleven.”

Nobody spoke. Bentley Shaw cleared his throat, his eyes darting toward the double doors at the back of the room.

Grant frowned, setting down his espresso. “What’s the matter with you all? Bentley, did the Atlanta numbers come in short? We talked about this. We adjust the projections and push forward.”

“The Atlanta numbers are fine, Grant,” Bentley said quietly, refusing to meet his friend’s gaze. “That isn't why we’re sitting here in silence.”

Before Grant could snap back, the heavy oak doors swung open.

The click of heels echoed across the hardwood border. Grant turned, annoyance twisting his features, preparing to berate whichever junior assistant had dared interrupt a closed-door executive session.

The words died in his throat.

Evelyn walked into the room. She was wearing an impeccably tailored navy suit, her dark hair pulled back into a sleek, severe chignon. On her lapel was a diamond brooch that had belonged to the matriarchs of the Vance family for four generations. Flanking her were two men in dark suits carrying heavy leather briefcases: Marcus Vance, and Arthur Sterling, the most feared bankruptcy and corporate litigator in the Midwest.

Lila scoffed loudly from her seat. “Evelyn? What is this? This is an executive board meeting. Spouses aren't permitted on the forty-second floor without prior security clearance.”

Evelyn didn't even glance at Lila. She kept her eyes fixed entirely on Grant, whose face was rapidly cycling through confusion, embarrassment, and fury.

“Evelyn, what the hell are you doing?” Grant hissed, half-rising from his leather armchair. “We are in the middle of corporate business. Go home. We will discuss your childish tantrum from Saturday night when I finish here.”

Arthur Sterling stepped forward, placing a thick stack of legal filings onto the center of the table with a dull thud.

“Mr. Mercer,” Sterling said, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. “Mrs. Mercer is not here as your spouse. She is here as the primary shareholder and sole authorized representative of Sentinel Vance Holdings, which owns ninety-two percent of the senior secured debt of Mercer Alder, as well as the golden voting share authorized under the original mezzanine agreement of 2022.”

Grant stared at the attorney, then burst into nervous laughter. “What are you talking about? Sentinel Vance is a private international syndicate based in Zurich. My wife has nothing to do with them. She inherited some pocket money from her grandmother, that's all!”

Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening a folder and sliding a certified document directly under Grant’s nose.

“Your wife is the sole beneficiary and governing director of the Vance Maritime and Industrial Trust,” Marcus said coldly. “The money that leased this floor, the money that bought your servers, the money that paid your executive bonuses when you lost the Horizon account—it was all hers. And as of eight o’clock this morning, Sentinel Vance has called the entirety of your debt due immediately.”
