Chapter 2 - The Whispers on the Marble Terrace

David’s smug grin vanished, his lower lip parting in a silent, paralyzed gasp. The champagne flute in his right hand trembled, spilling crystal drops over his polished Italian leather shoes. "What is this cheap circus?" Olivia hissed under her breath, noticing the way every single camera shifted away from her Vera Wang gown toward the woman descending the driveway like royalty arriving at court. "David, who is that woman? And why do those children look like miniature clones of you?" David couldn't summon his voice; his throat felt lined with sandpaper. For six years, he had operated under the comforting delusion that Emily was wallowing in misery, rotting away in some moldy basement apartment on the south side of the train tracks. He had convinced himself that by cutting her off without a single cent, he had trimmed dead weight. Now, she moved with the effortless grace of someone who owned the ground she walked upon. The three children flanked her, holding her hands with disciplined, affectionate composure. Whispers rippled through the rows of folding chairs like wildfire. "Is that Emily Hayes?" murmured Mrs. Kensington, a notorious tastemaker who had ignored David's greeting only twenty minutes prior. "I thought David said she was a destitute high school dropout." Then Arthur Pendelton walked beside her, whispering something that made Emily smile—a radiant, untroubled smile that held neither bitterness nor resentment, but a terrifying, calm indifference. As Emily reached the base of the marble terrace, David broke out in a sudden, cold sweat. His carefully crafted persona as a brilliant self-made tech prodigy suddenly felt as brittle as dry parchment.
