Chapter 7 - The Severed Ties

The next morning, the storm had passed completely, leaving the Swiss sky an impossible, crystalline blue.

Vincent sat at the heavy oak dining table, his laptop open beside four different satellite phones. His hair was combed, but the hard, merciless edge that had built his financial empire had returned—only this time, it was aimed with lethal precision at the past.

I stood in the kitchen doorway, holding a glass of fresh orange juice, watching him conduct business across three time zones.

"Marcus," Vincent spoke into the primary headset, his voice as cold and sharp as an alpine glacier. "Have the Chicago district attorney’s office received the audio recordings of Sophia Carter’s extortion threats from the gala?"

Marcus’s response came through the speaker with crisp clarity: "Yes, Mr. Moretti. The special investigations unit reviewed the surveillance files from the VIP lounge. Sophia was served with a formal felony extortion warrant twenty minutes ago at her townhouse."

"And the foundation assets?" Vincent demanded.

"Every penny of the private endowment has been frozen and redirected to the Chicago Children's Memorial Hospital," Marcus confirmed. "Her legal counsel attempted to reach out for a settlement, but I informed them that Mr. Moretti has authorized zero plea discussions."

Vincent leaned back in his chair, running a hand over his tired face. "Ensure that Noah is placed into a verified educational trust administered by independent court trustees. The boy is innocent of his mother's greed. He gets his schooling, but Sophia will never touch a single dollar of Moretti capital for the rest of her life."

"Understood, sir," Marcus replied. "And regarding your position at Moretti Holdings?"

"The board approved the transition?" Vincent asked.

"Unanimously," Marcus answered. "Your brother Anthony assumed the acting executive chairmanship this morning. Your indefinite leave of absence is officially registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission."

Vincent took off his headset, tossed it onto the table, and closed his laptop with a quiet, decisive snap.

He had stepped down from a twelve-billion-dollar corporate throne with less hesitation than he had once shown when buying a car.

He turned in his chair, noticing me standing in the doorway for the first time. The cold, ruthless commander vanished instantly, replaced by the tentative, hopeful man who had knelt in the rain.

"You stepped down?" I asked softly, stepping into the dining room.

Vincent stood up slowly, keeping his hands open at his sides. "A company can run with another chairman, Claire. But my child only gets one father. And I only get one chance to keep my soul."

He walked over to where I stood, stopping a polite distance away, his eyes filled with an anxious, vulnerable warmth.

"I bought the vineyard on the hillside behind your grandmother’s villa this morning," Vincent said, a nervous smile touching his lips. "The local notary delivered the deeds an hour ago. If you want to stay in Switzerland forever, we stay. If you want to raise our baby in the mountains, I will learn how to harvest grapes."

I looked down at the deeds resting on the sideboard, then up into the eyes of the man who had abandoned his kingdom just to stand in my kitchen.

"You don't know the first thing about farming grapes, Vincent," I murmured, a soft laugh escaping my lips despite myself.

"Then teach me, Claire," he whispered, taking a small step closer, his eyes pleading for a home. "Teach me how to grow something that doesn't hurt."

I took a slow breath, reached out my hand, and gently rested my fingers against his warm, clean-shaven cheek.

Vincent closed his eyes, leaning into my touch as if he had just been given the gift of sight after a lifetime of darkness.
