Chapter 1 - The Runway at O'Hare

Vincent’s black Maybach blew past the perimeter security gate at O’Hare International Airport, shattering the wooden barrier into splinters. Two airport patrol cruisers flipped on their flashing sirens behind him, but he didn't even tap his brakes.
His knuckles were bone white around the steering wheel, his chest heaving as if he were suffocating. The doctor’s words in the hospital lobby were still ringing in his ears like church bells during an air raid: Congratulations, Mr. Moretti. Your wife is seven weeks pregnant.
Seven weeks. While she was carrying his flesh and blood, he had stood in front of four hundred Chicago elites promising to fund Sophia’s child.
He had stood on the manicured lawn of their Gold Coast estate, tossing Noah into the air, while Claire watched silently from the upstairs window with her hand over her womb. And when she asked him if he wanted a family of their own, he had casually told her there was no reason to rush.
"You blind, arrogant fool," Vincent snarled at his reflection in the rearview mirror, tears of pure terror blurring the runway lights ahead.
He slammed on the brakes outside the international departure concourse, leaving four smoking black tire marks on the asphalt. He didn't bother turning off the engine or shutting the door.
He sprinted through the automatic doors into Terminal 5, shoving past business travelers and security personnel. People turned in shock at the sight of Vincent Moretti—the untouchable king of Chicago finance—disheveled, tie torn loose, shouting like a madman.
"Swiss Air Flight 42 to Zurich!" Vincent roared, slamming both hands down on the premium check-in desk. "Get me the gate supervisor! Right now!"
The desk agent gasped, stepping back from the sheer fury vibrating from his frame. "Sir, you cannot be back here! That flight has already pushed back from the gate!"
"Call the tower!" Vincent ordered, pulling out his titanium phone and dialing the port authority commissioner directly. "Tell them to halt that aircraft on the taxiway! I have half a billion dollars in civic municipal bonds sitting in that airport's expansion fund, and I will yank every single dollar if that plane leaves the ground!"
Through the massive glass windows overlooking the tarmac, Vincent watched the sleek Airbus A330 turn slowly toward Runway 28 Center. Its red and white navigation lights blinked rhythmically in the damp October twilight.
Somewhere inside that metal fuselage, sitting in quiet darkness with her hand resting over her stomach, was the woman he had sworn to cherish.
"Mr. Moretti," his assistant Marcus panted, finally catching up to him through the security checkpoint with two frantic airport police captains. "The FAA just denied the emergency ground hold. International airspace regulations prohibit recalling an aircraft once air traffic control issues takeoff clearance unless there is a verified mechanical threat."
"I don't care about regulations!" Vincent screamed, his voice cracking with absolute desperation. "That is my wife on that plane! She is carrying my child!"
Before the officers could lay a hand on him, the deep, mechanical thunder of twin turbofan engines vibrated the terminal glass.
Vincent pressed both palms against the cold windowpane, his breath fogging the glass as the aircraft accelerated down the tarmac. The nose lifted, slicing through the gray rain clouds, carrying his entire world across the Atlantic Ocean.

The roaring engines faded into the mist, leaving behind a silence so crushing that Vincent sank slowly to his knees on the airport floor.
For the first time in his thirty-four years, Vincent Moretti was utterly powerless.
