Chapter 6 - Friday Morning Reckoning

The executive boardroom on the forty-third floor of Halcyon Dynamics was an architectural triumph of glass, brushed steel, and polished white marble. At 8:50 AM on Friday, all twenty-four executive chairs around the massive oval table were occupied.

Vice presidents of operations, logistics, marketing, and human resources sat in stiff, nervous silence. At the head of the table sat Daniel Kang, immaculate in a bespoke three-piece suit, an expression of cold, predatory control carved into his features. To his right sat Victor Hale, looking completely relaxed, casually thumbing through an executive summary.

“Let us begin,” Daniel announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the room. “As many of you are aware, our internal security team recently uncovered an egregious breach of corporate espionage orchestrated by a temporary contractor inside our compliance division. This individual, operating under the name Maya Reed, attempted to extort executive leadership and compromise our strategic supplier relationships.”

Several vice presidents shifted uncomfortably in their seats. Most kept their eyes glued to their presentation folders, having learned long ago that looking Daniel directly in the eye during a disciplinary purge was a dangerous proposition.

“We have already initiated formal criminal proceedings,” Daniel continued, leaning forward, resting his forearms on the table. “Furthermore, this incident demonstrates that our existing compliance protocols are obsolete, redundant, and an active threat to operational efficiency. Effective immediately, the independent audit division is dissolved. All internal reviews will be consolidated under the direct executive authority of the Vice Chairman, Victor Hale.”

Victor offered a brief, satisfied nod. “A prudent and necessary reorganization to ensure shareholder value is protected from rogue external interference.”

“If there are no objections—” Daniel began.

The heavy mahogany doors at the rear of the boardroom swung open with a resounding click that echoed off the high ceilings.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

Daniel’s brow furrowed in furious disbelief. “What is the meaning of this? Security! I ordered the executive floor locked down until—”

The words died in his throat.

Walking into the room was not a disheveled temp clutching file folders.

Maya Reed entered with absolute command, flanked by Eleanor Brooks and two senior forensic investigators from Reed Meridian Partners. Maya was dressed in a razor-sharp charcoal designer suit, her presence radiating an undeniable, sovereign authority that instantly sucked all the air out of the room. Behind her walked Eric Nolan, carrying a thick leather binder, followed by three uniformed federal agents and Halcyon’s independent board trustee, Arthur Sterling.

Daniel rose from his chair, his face turning an angry shade of crimson. “Are you out of your mind? You broke into an executive board session? Security, remove this woman immediately!”

Nobody moved.

The two private security guards stationed at the back of the room looked at Arthur Sterling, then looked at the federal badges displayed by the agents, and stepped back against the wall, keeping their hands completely clear of their belts.

“Sit down, Daniel,” Arthur Sterling said, his voice deep, gravelly, and carrying decades of unassailable board authority.

Daniel blinked, suddenly disoriented. “Arthur? What is this? Why are you bringing a dismissed contractor into a confidential executive strategy meeting?”

Arthur Sterling didn't look at Daniel. He walked to the head of the table, stopped directly beside Daniel’s chair, and pulled out his reading glasses.

“Daniel, you seem to be laboring under a profound and catastrophic misunderstanding,” Arthur said, his voice echoing in the dead silence. “Two years ago, Halcyon Dynamics was acquired by Reed Meridian Partners through an eighty-two percent controlling equity purchase. The founder, majority shareholder, and chief executive of Reed Meridian did not install herself as public chairwoman because she preferred to evaluate this company’s operational health from an objective distance.”

Arthur turned to Maya and bowed his head with immense, formal respect.

“Gentlemen, members of the executive committee,” Arthur said clearly. “Allow me to properly introduce Maya Reed. The sole owner of Reed Meridian Partners, the majority shareholder of Halcyon Dynamics, and your ultimate employer.”
