Chapter 1 - The Discrepancy Behind the Glass

“People like you arrive here and think asking aggressive questions makes you valuable.” Daniel Kang leaned back in his Italian leather chair, tapping a polished Montblanc pen against the mahogany grain. Outside the expansive panoramic windows of his forty-second-floor office, the Chicago River snaked beneath a heavy autumn sky, slate-gray and icy. He fixed Maya with a stare meant to reduce division heads to nervous stammering. “You come in on a ninety-day temporary contract, clutching a generic business certificate, and imagine you’ve spotted an oversight that seasoned executives somehow missed. You want visibility. You want leverage.”

Maya Reed stood perfectly still across from him, neither fidgeting nor glancing at the open chair he had pointedly refused to offer. Her posture remained upright, her expression completely neutral, though a trace of cold coffee still stiffened the collar of her navy blouse beneath her jacket. “I do not look for leverage, Mr. Kang. I look at balance sheets. When a ledger records six consecutive wire transfers totaling over eighteen million dollars to an entity whose primary registered facility is an abandoned warehouse in Terre Haute, that isn’t a matter of subjective corporate strategy. That is a basic accounting discrepancy.”

Daniel’s hand paused on the desk. His dark eyes narrowed, a flash of pure calculation cutting through his usual veneer of supreme arrogance. He was not accustomed to pushback from anyone inside Halcyon Dynamics, let alone an hourly compliance contractor making twenty-two dollars an hour. For four years, his word had functioned as institutional gospel. He had systematically purged dissenters, promoted compliant yes-men, and built a wall of silence so thick that even the board of directors rarely questioned his methods as long as quarterly returns remained comfortably above twelve percent.

“You speak far outside your lane,” Daniel said, his voice dropping into a measured, dangerous register. “Alder Crest Materials is an offshore supply-chain hedge approved directly by the executive steering committee. Those warehouses you took the liberty of searching online are transitional hubs undergoing secondary refitting for our next-generation composite alloys. You don't have security clearance to view the operational blueprints, nor do you possess the intellectual bandwidth to comprehend how advanced industrial procurement operates in an aggressive market.”

Maya almost smiled, but kept her features disciplined. “Transitional hubs rarely list their corporate headquarters at a commercial mailbox rental in Fort Wayne. Nor do legitimate alloy producers route ninety-five percent of their net proceeds through secondary shell entities registered in the Cayman Islands under names that match executive trust funds.”

The room went dead silent. The faint hum of the building’s climate control system was the only sound between them. Daniel set the pen down with deliberate care. The slight tremble in his fingers was nearly imperceptible, but Maya noticed it instantly.

“You’ve been digging into personal trust records,” Daniel stated. It was no longer a rebuke; it was an accusation edged with real alarm. “That is a gross violation of your non-disclosure agreement, federal corporate privacy standards, and the basic terms of your agency contract. I could have private security escort you off this campus within three minutes, seize your personal electronic devices, and file an emergency injunction that ensures you never work in corporate compliance again.”

“You certainly could attempt that,” Maya replied softly, meeting his gaze without flinching. “You could call building security right now. You could have Marcus and his team escort me down to the lobby in full view of the trading floor. But that would generate an incident log. An incident log requires an official incident report. An incident report regarding an ongoing compliance investigation automatically routes to the outside independent trustee assigned under the parent holding firm’s oversight agreement. Would you like to explain to the independent trustee why a temporary clerk was expelled while examining Alder Crest invoices?”

May you like

Daniel’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched violently along his cheek. He stood up, towering over the desk, attempting to reassert the physical intimidation that had worked so effortlessly on the executive suite floor an hour earlier when he had dumped the wastebasket over her head. “You think you’re untouchable because you memorized a few governance clauses from an employee handbook? Let me make something crystal clear to you, Miss Reed. Halcyon Dynamics doesn’t run on handbooks. It runs on results. I built this empire from a failing regional supplier into a multi-billion-dollar market leader. The board answers to me. The market answers to me. On Friday, the only thing that will be educational is the severance package you won't be receiving.”

Maya gave a single, polite nod. “Then we both have work to do before Friday, Mr. Kang. Have a good evening.” She turned on her heel and walked out, leaving Daniel staring at the closed double doors of his office, his chest rising and falling in sharp, uneven breaths as the first seeds of genuine paranoia took root.
