Chapter 5 - The Collapse

Ethan stumbled backward out of Boardroom Alpha as if he had been struck with a sledgehammer. His junior partners didn't wait for him; they practically sprinted to the elevator bank, frantically typing on their phones to contact emergency defense counsel and salvage their personal careers.
Ethan dragged himself into the lobby, his hands shaking so violently he dropped his briefcase. He retrieved his confiscated phone from the security desk. The moment he switched off airplane mode, the device exploded with notifications.
Seventy-four missed calls. Over a hundred text messages.
The notifications streamed in an unbroken torrent:
ALERT: Caldwell Pierce trading privileges suspended by FINRA.
URGENT: SEC enforcement division has executed an entry order at New York offices.
WALL STREET JOURNAL: Meridian Crown scraps buyout of Caldwell Pierce amid multi-million dollar fraud investigation.
His primary partner in New York, Richard Pierce, was screaming on a voicemail Ethan listened to with a trembling ear: ""Ethan, what the hell did you do?! Federal marshals are literally walking through the trading floor seizing hard drives! The banks pulled our lines! We are completely wiped out! Where are you?!""
Ethan leaned against the cold marble pillar of the lobby, gasping for breath. The world he had spent fifteen years constructing—the status, the prestige, the invites to billionaire summits, the illusion of supreme control—had disintegrated in less than an hour.
Then he remembered Madison.
He lunged toward the exit, hailed a street cab instead of his pre-arranged limousine, and ordered the driver to race back to the Hotel des Bergues. He needed an ally. He needed someone to tell him they would fight this, that they could take the assets already stashed in Miami and rebuild somewhere without an extradition treaty.
He burst into the presidential suite, panting and soaked in sweat.
The suite was in disarray. Madison was furiously zipping shut three massive Louis Vuitton suitcases laid out across the king-sized bed. She was dressed in an all-black designer tracksuit, wearing dark sunglasses indoors.
""Madison! Thank God you're still here,"" Ethan cried, rushing toward her. ""Listen to me, we have to leave immediately. The deal... Claire was Meridian. It was a trap from the beginning. We need to catch a flight to Dubai before the Swiss authorities freeze our passports—""
Madison didn't turn around. She grabbed her Birkin bag from the vanity. ""I already spoke to my manager in New York, Ethan.""
Ethan froze. ""What?""
She turned to face him, pulling down her sunglasses. Her eyes were completely cold, devoid of the fawning admiration she had showered on him just twenty-four hours earlier.
""The feds froze the Miami penthouse,"" she said, her voice sharp and metallic. ""Your firm is under criminal indictment. Every brand I represent is calling my agent trying to drop me by association. I am not going to Dubai with an indicted felon.""
""Madison, I stole that money for you!"" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking with desperation. ""I bought you that apartment! I divorced Claire for you!""

""I never told you to commit federal crimes, Ethan,"" she sneered, stepping past him toward the door while a hotel porter quietly took her bags. ""You told me you were a master of the universe. Turns out you were just an idiot who didn't even know his own wife was holding the strings. Don't call me again.""
The suite door slammed shut, leaving Ethan standing alone in the cavernous, quiet room, the echo of his ruin ringing in his ears.
