Chapter 2 - Geneva at Dawn

The morning sun over Lake Geneva broke through a shroud of silver mist, illuminating the pristine neoclassical facade of the Hotel des Bergues. Ethan stood on his private suite balcony, buttoning the cuffs of a bespoke three-piece charcoal suit he had purchased specifically for this morning. The crisp Alpine air smelled of snow and old wealth. He checked his reflection in the French doors. He looked formidable. He looked like a man about to be anointed into the global financial elite.

Behind him, Madison emerged from the bedroom swathed in a plush white terrycloth robe, holding a cup of espresso. ""What time is the car coming?""

""Forty minutes,"" Ethan said, turning around with a triumphant grin. ""The plenary boardroom at Meridian Crown’s headquarters is booked for nine o'clock sharp. By eleven, the signatures will be notarized. By noon, the wire transfers initiate. After that, we take the helicopter up to Gstaad for the weekend.""

""Did you remember to check the settlement filing?"" Madison asked casually, picking up a diamond-studded compact mirror. ""Your New York attorney sent an email earlier. Something about Claire’s signature.""

Ethan waved a dismissive hand. ""She signed the preliminary release electronically last night. Her lawyer tried to insert a reservation of rights clause, but my guy shut it down immediately. Claire knows she has no leverage. She’s probably packing her cardboard boxes into that pathetic Honda right now, wondering how she’s going to afford groceries in Queens.""

""She’s lucky you gave her two hundred and fifty grand,"" Madison purred, leaning against his chest and inhaling his cologne. ""Most men in your bracket would have dragged it out in court until she ran out of retainer money.""

""I wanted a clean break,"" Ethan murmured, kissing her forehead. ""Old baggage ruins the aerodynamics of moving fast.""

Across the Rhone River, in the private executive wing of Meridian Crown’s world headquarters, Claire Ashford sat at the head of an empty, sixty-seat boardroom constructed of dark walnut and bulletproof glass. She was dressed in a tailored navy double-breasted suit from an atelier in Milan, her dark hair swept back into an immaculate chignon. Her wrists were bare except for a vintage Patek Philippe that had been given to her by her grandfather when she finished her doctorate in financial economics at Oxford.

Beside her, Daniel Mercer laid out five thick, red-bound dossiers.

""The board of directors is completely briefed,"" Daniel said quietly. ""Chairman Vance has ceded the chair to you for the duration of the Caldwell Pierce session. Ethan believes he is meeting with Julian Vance and a consortium of institutional trustees. He has never seen a picture of the primary shareholder.""

Claire rested her chin on her fingers, looking down at the detailed balance sheets. ""Eight years, Daniel. For eight years, I watched him turn into a caricature of the very predators he used to mock when we were broke students eating instant ramen on a living room rug. I didn't hide my family's identity out of malice. I hid it because my father taught me that if you want to know a man’s true soul, you must let him believe you have nothing to offer him but your company.""

""And he failed the test,"" Daniel observed gently.

""Miserably,"" Claire said, her eyes darkening. ""He didn't just fail; he plundered. Look at these transfers to Blue Harbor. He was siphoning capital while smiling at me over breakfast, telling me we needed to cut back on home expenses. He told me yesterday that I lacked the status to walk in his world. He wanted a partner who understood power.""

She closed the dossier with a sharp, decisive thud that echoed through the vast chamber.

""Let’s see how well he handles the reality of it.""
