Chapter 7 - The Dinner Where Nobody Smiled

Catherine attended Vivian’s dinner in a navy dress and her late husband’s watch.

She carried no gift.

Vivian noticed immediately.

“Are we being dramatic tonight?”

Catherine handed her coat to the attendant.

“I hope not.”

The dining room glowed with candles and polished silver. Foundation trustees stood near the fireplace, balancing drinks and making careful conversation.

The society columnist was already taking photographs.

Vivian greeted everyone warmly.

Then she realized Dominic wasn’t coming.

Neither was Emily.

Her smile tightened.

“Surely they can spare one evening.”

Catherine looked at her sister-in-law.

“They’re spending it where they feel comfortable.”

“At a hardware store?”

Several people went quiet.

Catherine set down her glass.

“Yes. With people who are happy they exist.”

Across the city, Emily sat in Rachel’s office watching a clock.

She hadn’t wanted updates from the dinner.

She had wanted to know whether the formal steps scheduled for that evening had happened.

Beside her, Dominic spoke quietly with Helena.

He was wearing an ordinary dark sweater.

Without a driver waiting outside or Adrian hovering behind him, he looked strangely unfamiliar.

Maya’s call arrived at eight seventeen.

“The foundation board has received the documented findings. Counsel is preserving the records. Vivian has been notified that she no longer has access to the accounts while the investigation proceeds.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“And Adrian?”

“Authorities are handling that. Stay where you are.”

Dominic looked toward the window.

Emily saw the movement.

“Don’t go.”

He turned.

“If there’s something—”

“There are people doing their jobs. Let them.”

A muscle moved in his jaw.

Then he sat down.

It was such a small act.

For him, Emily suspected, it was one of the hardest.

At Vivian’s house, the dinner had fallen apart before the first course.

A trustee had stepped into the hallway to call the foundation’s attorney.

Another had asked Vivian about the consulting payments.

Vivian laughed.

“My nephew has allowed a personal matter to cloud his judgment.”

Catherine spoke before anyone could answer.

“Then explain the payments without discussing his wife.”

Vivian’s eyes flashed.

“You always encouraged his weaknesses.”

“I encouraged him to love someone.”

“And look where that got us.”

The words landed in the quiet room.

Catherine stared at her.

There it was.

No elegant explanation.

No concern about reputation.

Just resentment, finally spoken plainly.

“You wanted her gone,” Catherine said.

“I wanted this family protected.”

“From a woman who makes pancakes badly?”

Vivian’s face flushed.

“From a woman who would eventually ask him to give everything up.”

Catherine’s answer was quiet.

“Perhaps some things should have been given up years ago.”

At Rachel’s office, Emily’s phone lit up.

Vivian.

She let the first call pass.

Then the second.

On the third, Rachel asked, “Do you want to answer?”

Emily thought for a moment.

“Yes. With you here.”

Vivian didn’t bother with greetings.

“You have no idea what you’re destroying.”

Emily listened.

“Dominic built his life before you came along.”

“Yes,” Emily said.

“You think a few tears and a pregnancy make you special?”

Dominic rose halfway from his chair.

Emily lifted one hand.

He stopped.

“I think my medical information belonged to me,” she said. “I think my father should have known who owned his building. I think you owe the foundation an explanation.”

“You were never suited to this family.”

Emily looked at Catherine’s empty chair.

At Rachel’s legal pad.

At Dominic, standing still because she had asked him to.

Then she understood something she wished she had known months earlier.

Vivian’s judgment had never been a fact.

Only a voice she had heard too often.

“I don’t need your approval anymore.”

She ended the call.

Her hands shook afterward.

Rachel passed her a glass of water.

Dominic waited until she looked at him.

“You were extraordinary.”

Emily shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“I know.”

This time, the words didn’t irritate her.

He had watched.

He had stayed.

He hadn’t tried to take the moment away.

A little later, Maya called again.

Adrian had been taken into custody in connection with the threats and related financial activity.

The investigation was expanding.

There would be interviews, records, difficult months.

Nothing was finished.

Emily leaned back against the sofa.

Dominic sat across from her.

May you like

Between them lay no envelope.

Only a box of tissues, two untouched coffees, and the first quiet evening in which the truth had belonged to everyone in the room.
