Chapter 4 - The Woman Who Asked Permission

Rachel Kim arrived carrying a battered leather briefcase and wearing boots sensible enough for New York slush.

She shook Emily’s hand first.

“Before we discuss anything, who would you like in the room?”

“Dad. Catherine. Dominic can stay for the security part.”

Rachel nodded and wrote it down.

That small act nearly made Emily cry.

Someone had asked.

Someone had listened.

The independent investigator Rachel recommended arrived an hour later. Maya Torres had spent years investigating financial crimes before opening her own firm.

She listened while Dominic explained the photographs.

Then she asked to see the original messages.

“Not screenshots. The files.”

Dominic handed over his phone.

Maya looked at Emily.

“Do I have your permission to examine the messages sent to your husband that include information about you?”

“Yes.”

“And your phone? Only for signs that someone accessed your location or accounts. You’ll receive a written record of what we check.”

Emily agreed.

Within twenty minutes, Maya found a shared location account Emily barely remembered activating.

“Adrian set it up,” Emily said. “After Dominic said the neighborhood wasn’t safe.”

Dominic’s expression hardened.

Maya raised one hand.

“Access doesn’t establish who misused it. We document first.”

She spoke without fear or deference.

Emily liked her immediately.

The canceled shipment also left a trail. Someone had called the supplier using an account authorization associated with Caruso Property Services.

Frank looked at Dominic.

“Your company owns the building?”

Dominic frowned.

“No.”

Rachel’s pen stopped.

“Let’s verify that.”

By late afternoon, they had.

The building had changed ownership eighteen months earlier through a company with a forgettable name.

That company belonged to a chain of other companies.

At the end stood a Caruso holding company.

Emily stared at Dominic.

“You bought my father’s building?”

“I didn’t know.”

It sounded impossible.

Then Maya placed another document on the table.

The acquisition approval carried Dominic’s electronic signature.

The account administrator was Martin Vale.

His attorney.

Emily got up and walked to the sink.

For months, she had thought her marriage was falling apart because she wasn’t elegant enough, quiet enough, useful enough.

Now the floor beneath those beliefs was opening.

Catherine stood beside her without touching her.

“Sweetheart?”

“Please don’t tell me everything will be okay.”

“I wasn’t going to.”

Emily looked at her.

Catherine’s eyes shone.

“I was going to tell you that I should have asked why you stopped coming on Sundays.”

Behind them, Dominic was calling his corporate counsel.

Not Martin.

Someone else.

His voice remained level as he instructed her to preserve records and prevent routine deletion.

Emily heard a phrase repeated.

No exceptions for family.

At five, Vivian called Catherine.

Catherine put the phone on speaker after getting Emily’s permission.

“My goodness,” Vivian began. “I’ve been trying to reach everyone. Dominic’s behaving strangely.”

“What do you need, Vivian?”

“I heard Emily has gone to Queens. I hope she isn’t making a scene.”

Emily looked down at her hands.

They were steady.

“I’m here, Vivian.”

A pause.

Then a sugary laugh.

“Darling. I only meant that stress can make women emotional.”

“Why did you tell me Natalie Hart was involved with my husband?”

Silence stretched.

“I never said involved.”

“You said he had found someone suitable.”

“You misunderstood.”

“And why did you tell Natalie I was unstable?”

Dominic leaned forward.

Catherine touched his wrist.

Emily waited.

Vivian’s voice changed.

“I have spent years protecting this family from people who don’t understand its responsibilities.”

Emily felt an unexpected calm.

“Then you won’t mind explaining your concerns to my attorney.”

She ended the call.

For a second, no one spoke.

Then Maya’s laptop chimed.

She read the screen and looked at Dominic.

“The company that bought this building also paid a consulting fee the week the threats started.”

“To whom?”

Maya turned the computer.

An elegant name appeared above a bank reference.

Vivian Caruso Foundation.

Catherine sat down slowly.

Outside, the hardware store’s neon sign flickered on against the dark.

May you like

Emily rested a hand over her stomach.

For the first time, the danger had a familiar face.
