Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Night

Before Noah could process Claire’s revelation, the heavy oak doors of the executive suite burst open. Travis Bell, Noah’s immediate supervisor, rushed into the room, his face pale and sweating profusely, clutching an expensive leather briefcase. Behind him stood two private security guards who had clearly been paid off, looking nervous and aggressive.

“Claire! You’ve completely lost your mind!” Travis shouted, ignoring Noah entirely as he hurried toward the desk. “The Holloway family is threatening legal action! The stock is going to plummet twenty percent at market open on Monday! You just humiliated the most powerful logistics heir on the East Coast for a basement records clerk!”

Claire didn't flinch. She crossed her arms, standing tall despite being barefoot in her ruined wedding gown. “Get out of my office, Travis. And take your hired thugs with you before I have Boston police remove you in handcuffs.”

Travis sneered, a desperate, ugly malice surfacing in his eyes. “You don't understand the situation, Miss Whitmore. You think you're still in control? The board is convening an emergency session right now at the downtown club. Grant Holloway’s father controls thirty-five percent of voting proxy shares. By morning, they will vote to strip you of your executive authority. And as for your little pet here...”

Travis turned on Noah, his eyes bulging with fury. “Carter, you pathetic loser! You think standing next to the boss makes you untouchable? You took files from the secure archive without authorization! That’s corporate espionage. I will personally ensure you spend the next ten years in federal prison. And who’s going to take care of that sick little brat of yours then, huh? She’ll be in state foster care by the end of the week!”

Something inside Noah snapped. For six years, he had endured quiet humiliation. He had accepted low pay, swallowed his pride, bowed his head to arrogant middle managers, and lived on scraps—all to protect Sophie. He had allowed himself to be treated like an invisible ghost. But hearing Travis threaten Sophie’s future erased every shred of fear remaining in his body.

Noah moved before anyone could react. In two long strides, he closed the distance between them, grabbed Travis by the lapels of his custom tuxedo, and slammed the older man hard against the heavy mahogany bookshelf. Books and decorative glass awards rattled violently.

“Say another word about my daughter,” Noah whispered, his voice deadly low, vibrating with raw, unadulterated fury, “and you won't make it to that board meeting.”

Travis gasped, choking on his own spit, terrified by the sudden transformation of the quiet, obedient clerk. The two security guards reached for their holsters, but Claire’s voice cut through the room like a whip.

“Touch him, and I will personally see that every single one of your private licenses is revoked, and you spend your lives behind bars for conspiracy to commit corporate fraud!” Claire barked. She picked up the desk phone and dialed three digits on speaker. “Chief Miller. Bring the tactical security team to the executive penthouse immediately. We have trespassers attempting to steal company property.”

The guards looked at each other, realized the scale of the trap they had walked into, and backed out of the doorway without saying a single word, completely abandoning Travis.

Noah let go of Travis’s collar. Travis stumbled, coughing, adjusting his crooked tie with trembling hands. “You’re making a mistake, Carter,” Travis hissed weakly, backing toward the door. “Grant Holloway doesn't lose. You’ll see what happens to people who cross him.”

With that final, hollow threat, Travis scrambled out of the office and fled down the corridor.

Noah stood in the middle of the luxurious room, breathing heavily, his knuckles throbbing beneath Claire’s handkerchief. The adrenaline that had surged through him began to recede, leaving behind a cold, terrifying reality. He had physically assaulted his boss. He had openly defied a billionaire family.

“Noah,” Claire said gently, coming up beside him. She placed a reassuring hand on his forearm. “Breathe. Look at me.”

Noah turned to look at her, his voice shaking. “My daughter, Claire. Grant and Travis know where I live. They know Sophie is at home with an elderly babysitter right now. If they’re desperate enough to threaten federal prison, they’re desperate enough to hurt her.”

Claire’s eyes hardened with fierce determination. “Then we aren't staying here. Call your babysitter right now. We are going to get your daughter, and you are both coming with me.”
