Chapter 3 - The Unraveling of the Dynasty

Victoria jumped to her feet, knocking her chair backward onto the concrete.

“You can’t do this!” she screamed, her voice echoing shrilly off the corrugated steel walls of the pier. “The Moretti assets belong to the bloodline! Your grandfather built this empire for the family, not for some baker’s daughter you picked up off the street!”

Lorenzo didn't raise his voice. He didn't even blink.

He reached out, caught Victoria by the lapel of her expensive mink coat, and pulled her forward until her face was inches from his.

“My grandfather built this empire on honor, Victoria,” Lorenzo said, his dark eyes burning with an ancient, unforgiving flame. “He never stole from the woman who slept beside him. He never allowed his relatives to turn his wife into a servant while they drank his champagne.”

He let go of her coat with a sharp flick of his wrist, sending her stumbling back against the table.

“As of midnight tonight,” Lorenzo announced to the assembled capos standing in the shadows, “Marco Moretti and Victoria Moretti are stripped of their rank, their shares, and their protection under the Moretti name.”

A sharp collective intake of breath swept through the warehouse.

To be stripped of protection in the Five Families was not merely financial ruin. It was an open invitation to every rival syndicate in New York to collect outstanding debts without fear of retaliation.

Marco fell to his knees on the concrete, his hands still bound behind him, dragging himself toward Lorenzo’s boots.

“Lorenzo! Please! The Albanians are waiting for me in Queens!” Marco wept, tears washing grease across his cheeks. “If you take away the family name, they’ll kill me before morning! Lorenzo, please! I’m your cousin!”

Lorenzo looked down at him with an expression of absolute, terrifying detachment.

“Then I suggest you learn how to bake bread, Marco,” Lorenzo said coldly. “I hear the shifts start at four in the morning.”

He turned his back on them, walking toward the heavy metal exit doors where his black armored SUV was idling in the falling snow.

Dante fell into step beside him, holding his encrypted tablet.

“What about the rest of the family, Boss?” Dante asked quietly as the cold river wind whipped around their coats. “Uncle Silvio took the designer luggage. The cousins took the leather jackets. Every single one of them accepted gifts from her purse.”

Lorenzo stopped beside the rear door of the SUV, resting his gloved hand on the reinforced frame.

He looked back at the glowing lights of the Manhattan skyline across the dark water, thinking of the girl who had spent eight years rising in the freezing dark just to buy their hollow smiles.

“All of them,” Lorenzo commanded, his voice as hard as granite. “Every relative who sat at that table tonight will surrender their keys to the family properties by noon tomorrow. If they want a roof over their heads, they can sign their deeds over to Emma’s private trust.”

“And if they refuse?”

May you like

Lorenzo’s lips curved into a cold, predatory smile that made even Dante’s seasoned spine tingle.

“Then tell them they can explain their objections to the bottom of the East River.”
