Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Ward

Gunfire shattered the silence of St. Jude's main atrium.

Suppressed rounds chewed through the decorative drywall, spitting plaster dust and glass shards across the floor. Marco and the two Moretti security operatives reacted with mechanical precision, dropping to one knee and laying down disciplined, deafening return fire that instantly pinned the Falcone hitmen against the rear elevator bank.

Clara was pushed flat against the floor behind the heavy stone reception desk, Dante’s massive frame covering her like iron armor. She could smell the scent of his cologne mingled with the sharp tang of cordite and the fresh seep of blood from his torn ribs.

""Dante! Your stitches!"" she yelled over the deafening cracks of gunfire.

""Worry about the stitches later, Mouse,"" he hissed through gritted teeth, firing two precise shots around the edge of the pillar. A gunman dropped near the pharmacy doors, clutch-gripping his thigh and dropping his weapon.

""This is a hospital!"" Clara screamed, her medic instincts overriding every instinct of self-preservation. ""There are children in the adjacent pediatric wing! There are post-op patients in recovery right down that hallway!""

She saw a young floor nurse trapped under a shattered glass display case ten yards away, blood pouring from an open gash on her temple, too terrified to move.

Without thinking, Clara kicked off her leather loafers and prepared to scramble toward the wounded girl.

Dante caught her wrist in a vice grip. ""Are you insane? Stay down!""

""That girl is bleeding to death from a severed temporal artery!"" Clara shouted, her eyes blazing into his. ""You fight your war, Dante! Let me do my job!""

She ripped her wrist free and lunged across the open, exposed tile on her hands and knees.

A round sparked against the floor inches from her knee, kicking sharp ceramic dust into her face. Dante leaned entirely out from behind the granite barricade, deliberately exposing his torso to draw the shooter's fire. He fired three rapid rounds through the shooter's chest armor, taking him out of the fight permanently.

""Marco! Suppress that corridor! Cover her!"" Dante bellowed.

Marco stepped into the open, laying down a hail of fire that forced the remaining two gunmen to retreat into the blind corner of the service stairwell.

Clara reached the terrified nurse, slid across the floor, and immediately clamped her thumb against the girl's temple, compressing the artery against the bone. The arterial bleeding stopped instantly.

""Look at me, sweetie,"" Clara said, her voice dropping into the soothing, hypnotic calm of a master trauma doctor despite the gun smoke hanging thick in the air. ""Look at my eyes. You're fine. It's just a surface cut. Keep your fingers right here, press as hard as you can, and don't let go. Do you understand?""

The nurse nodded tearfully, pressing her small hand over Clara's fingers.

From the shadow of the service stairwell, the remaining Falcone assassin saw Clara exposed on the floor. He stepped out, raising his barrel directly at the back of her neck.

""Dr. Vance!"" Greg screamed from across the lobby.

Before the trigger could be squeezed, a steel surgical tray flew across the room, striking the gunman's gun barrel and throwing his aim into the ceiling.

It was Dr. Ross. The elderly surgeon had emerged from the triage bay holding a heavy metal defibrillator paddle, his eyes blazing with fury.

That half-second distraction was all Dante needed. He closed the distance in four strides, grabbed the assassin by his tactical vest, slammed his skull into the concrete wall with bone-shattering force, and disarmed the submachine gun with a single fluid motion. The assassin slumped unconscious to the floor.

Silence returned to the lobby, heavy, suffocating, and reeking of ozone and blood.

The remaining two shooters had fled back into the underground parking bay, where the sirens of approaching metropolitan police cruisers and federal task force vehicles could already be heard wailing in the distance.

Clara stood up slowly, her knees covered in white drywall dust, her hands stained with the nurse's blood.

Across the ruined lobby, Richard Sterling was cowering under a plastic desk, sobbing uncontrollably into his hands.

Dante holstered his weapon. His face was pale, his breath labored. A wide crimson stain had bloomed across the left side of his tailored shirt; the violent physical movement had shredded Clara's careful sutures, reopening the deep blade wound along his ribs.

He staggered once, catching himself against a rolling stretcher.

Clara marched over to him, her face thunderous. She grabbed his arm, slung it over her shoulder, and kicked the locked doors of Trauma Bay 1 wide open.

""Trauma Bay 1, now!"" she barked at the paralyzed residents and nurses who were slowly emerging from cover. ""Greg! Bring me four bags of normal saline, two units of O-negative blood, and an irrigation tray! Sarah! Get me a sterile surgical tray, 2-0 vicryl, and an emergency crash cart! Move! That is an order!""

For a second, nobody moved. They looked at the disheveled woman who had been fired eight hours earlier.

Then Greg swallowed hard, saluted with a trembling hand, and shouted, ""Yes, Dr. Vance! Right away!""

Sarah scrambled into the supply room, moving faster than she ever had in her career.

Clara shoved Dante down onto the trauma bed, ripped open his shirt with sterile trauma shears, and looked at the gaping, bleeding wound. Her hands didn't shake. Her mind cleared into absolute, crystalline focus.

May you like

""You're an idiot, Dante Moretti,"" she muttered, grabbing an antiseptic sponge.

Dante looked up at her through his pain, a faint, proud smile touching his lips. ""And you, Dr. Vance... are the chief of this department.""
